This is a a follow-up to my question about 8 foot 5 weights. My interest lies in an 8, or 8 1/2, foot 5 weight.
Thanks.

I know that John Pickard, and AJ Thramer, build Dickerson taper cane rods, and both are master craftman. I have a Pickard and a couple Thramers, lovely rods
all. On a regular basis, who else builds Dickerson taper cane rods?

I would guess anybody that is an experienced builder could build a Dickerson taper. There are many different versions but a lot of them are published.

Eperous, go back a few pages to about May 8th and there is a post under Collecting titled Dickerson which covers this exact question.
BTBH, you've already answered your question. Best, Dan Left Coast Tackle |

Art Weiler builds several Dickerson clones that are very nice. He usually has rods in stock and is very easy to deal with. Do a key word search for Art Weiler
and his web site should come up, or call him at 610-681-7128.

"Streamer" Abrams specializes in Dickerson tapers. His rods are top notch.

AJ's Hollowbuilt Dickerson tapers are really something. I haven't handled the longer/heavier rods, but the 6611 and 7012 are really sweet casting
rods and for the money just can't be beat.

Back in the early 90's Daryll Whitehead, Paul French and Howard Schleski built beautiful rods, many based on Dickerson tapers.

The list of rodmakers who don't make Dickerson tapers is much shorter than the one of those who do. I would hazard a guess that Bob Summers, Ron Kusse,
Walt Carpenter, Marc Aaroner, Ted Simroe and Bob Taylor probably wouldn't make a rod with a Dickerson taper, but I haven't asked any of them to so I
may be wrong. Pretty much the rest of us would gladly make a Dickerson taper, or any other that anyone wants.

John, understood... perhaps I phrased my question incorrectly... it's not so much who can build a cane rod to a Dickerson taper as much as
who specializes in building Dickerson tapers... for one, I believe John Pickard fits that bill... and when I think of Art Weiler in PA, I tend
to think he specializes in Garrison tapers.... this is not to say that these folks can't or don't build other model rods, but I believe they are best
known for specific tapers... I could be all wet on this, but that's my belief...
Thanks... Ed |

Alan Kube in Colorado, and Rick Cunningham in Texas both make wonderful rods based on Dickerson tapers.

I was mentioning Carlin in the sense that he appears to have a whole line of tapers that are "Dickerson Based" ---the "DB" tapers. He also
has some straight up Dickersons and would ( I can't speak for him) probably make what you wanted (as he is making me a Payne Canadian Canoe). Look here to
see the DB and Dickerson tapers.

Ed;
Sorry, I was being facetious. Yes, John Pickard is probably the best known and most authentic maker of Dickerson tapers, he has Dickerson's rod shop now. Dickerson tapers are popular both with customers and rodmakers, they are as gratifiying to build as they are to fish with because you can be confident that they will appeal to a wide range of casters and so be more saleable. When I have to the urge to build a rod to sell it's usually either a Dickerson taper or a Payne. Before the Crash of '08 Dickerson tapers sold well for me in the local fly shops and Payne's seemed to do well here. john |
