Quite by chance I will be in London end of september so will be going to
Angling Auctions sale in Chiswick. Is it reasonable to assume that prices are lower than what you would pay a dealer? Is the auction house description of a
reel correct or is it a case of caveat emptor? Would you recommend buying at auction? Any advice welcomed. steve.
Not much of a response to that one!
So do most collectors buy privately? I can't imagine anyone being in the fortunate position of being offered a box of full of Hardy out of some old ladies
attic these days? Everyone has access to all the dealers websites so can see prices/availability. Maybe bargain hunting isn't the name of the game with
reels, being content with buying at market price?

It seems like Freemans auctions realise fairly high prices plus you get o add the commision. Then us guys on the wrong side of the pond get hit with taxes
at customs so its been my experience that no super deals are to be had pricewise. That being said I still buy the odd reel this way cause he does find the
gear. Your PM'S will get out of hand when the catalogue comes out with everyone wanting a lot or two looked at. Have fun at the auction,Russ
Never trust a auction houses description, in my experience the problem is not what they tell you about, it's what they don't tell you about.
Also bear in mind the house charges & V.A.T.
And by the way bubba remember the photograph of the Perfect you kindly posted for me, well i've had a new handle fitted to my reel & when I get time
i'll post a pic and maybe you can give your opinion?

i will also be goin to the auction , you can expect to find that the descriptions wont be entirely correct and you can expect to pay huge prices , but its good
fun and very enjoyable , wait till the big lot comes up , i think its lot 300 , its gonna be 12 grand or something silly , expect a round of applause when it
sells.. feel free to introduce yourself , have a look at my fotos to see what i look like , otherwise i will be the guy buyin the scottish reels...
Nackymoo, any chance you could wear a red carnation in your lapel and carry a copy of The Times under your arm for recognition? [I'm terrible at
remembering faces].
Will definitely say hello. Just hope I don't say, 'Is that you,Nackymoo?' to the wrong person!! steve.
Angling Auctions take pride in their descriptions. I have entered around 20 lots and the descriptions are toned down rather than up, also the guideline prices.
Obviously bargains are found in the lots other people don't want - not in Ustonson, vom Hoffe or Hardy.
Yes collectors go there, and no Granny's clearout sale nowadays will consist of Intrepid reels, plastic rods and the like, not Hardy brass faced Mk1
Perfects.
I think you pay VAT only on the commission, which is often around 17%.
Angling Auctions items are of a high standard in my opinion, I have been to viweings of three different UK auctions and my opinion
is that Anging Auctions stuff seems a bit consistently better quality. I don't think they would accept junk.
The catalogue is available for the September Sale - only a couple off CC de France in this time (one being my own), no Marvels Fairies or Fairchilds that I
could see.
a couple of very rare reels, quite a few vom Hoffs, a few Cascapedias, and the usual Perfects.
dont forget that freemans is auction only , you dont have dealers stalls there to pass the time in between lots , but you can always walk around the hall ,
the magnificent staircase lined with beautiful paintings and huge chandeliers are a sight to behold...or failing that , you could just go to the bookies nearby
, i think there are 6 meetings scheduled for that date so you can bet all day!! , even if i dont get any reels i will be happy cos i really only go down so i
can have fish n chips from "chris,s chippy" haddock on the friday and cod on the saturday ....top class!!
Those stalls are great at the other auctions in England aren't they - some with rods shaped like a dog's hind leg, and
such great bargains and helpful advice?
I asked one such about a Perfect copy to counterbalance an Aberdeen, not having funding for a Hardy
pre WW. The owner sneared at my ignorance for presuming that such a thing existed.
A couple of hours later in the auction - A Carter more or less identical Perfect copy, weighs a ton and a click like a road drill. YES.
