Perhaps this DVD has been mentioned before, and perhaps it should be discussed in a place other than the Book Talk section of the Forum, but it surely is an
enjoyable 47 minute movie. David James Duncan wrote and narrated the film, and he has written several books about fishing ( sort of about fishing ). If you
haven't seen this, treat yourself and watch it. DR

Totally agree.... I never tire of watching it. It really captures the spirit of the entire journey, harvesting the bamboo, crafting the rod, and being on the
stream. Ducan's narrative is wonderful, and "bug puppets" has stuck with me since my first viewing.

I absolutely concur.
It tells the whole story and is an almost mystical experience. Anyone who watches it and still doesn't "get it"...never will. Best regards,

I watched it again last night, and it gets better each time. This time I connected to how much it meant to Hoagy Carmichael to be there where the bamboo grew
and was harvested. The film really brings home the spiritual connection many of us feel when fishing bamboo.

Hoagy was great but in actuality Glenn Brackett was the first rod make to visit the Chinese and helped with selection.

I watched it the other night as well. It gets me all soft for bamboo everytime I see it.
I believe the same film producer created the "Winston Waters" film as well, which I haven't seen yet. Any see it before? Interestingly, the same bamboo culm dealer has started a cork ring business as well, Picky Bastard Cork, with an enlightening video about how he selects cork rings. |

In 20/20 hindsight, Winston Waters is an unintentional elegy of a company that has lost its soul and will probably not return to its former glory. The late
Charles Kuralt was the perfect choice for narrator. In regards to the remarks about Hoagy and Glenn, I believe Hoagy was referring to the past masters of the
craft that he came to understand through Mr. Garrison. None of the Catskill makers from the glory years set foot in those bamboo forests.

Doc-
Winston Waters was produced by David Ondaatje, the current owner of the R. L. Winston Rod Company. Trout Grass was produced by Andy Royer. The connection between the two, besides Glenn Brackett, is that both were directed by Ed George. I have both DVDs. I watch Winston Waters often. Besides the historical information I especially like the parts that show Tom Morgan and Glenn Brackett fishing. A young Aussie will be joining me on Thursday to fish for a week. In his last report he was in Twin Bridges. After touring the Winston facility he paid a visit to Sweetgrass. He reports that "after much chatting, they offered him a Sweetgrass rod to fish for the day". I find that pretty amazing. I don't know whether it was Glenn, Jerry, or someone else at Sweetgrass who made the offer, but such a wonderful gesture would make it very difficult for me to leave without placing an order when I returned the rod. That poor Aussie may never be able to fish boron again!!!! His response after fishing the Sweetgrass rod was, "Oh dear that could have been an expensive mistake it was sooo good to cast. I'm thinking a 7'6'' 3wt could be on order very shortly." I keep telling him to buy the rod that he would fish the most, because once he starts fishing it he will want to fish it more and more. I've often read how generous Glenn and Jerry are and how much they do for their community and for the world in general. I don't think you really appreciate it until their generosity has benefited someone that you know. They are wonderful people and I hope they find only the best in life in the future. Gee. I wonder if Carlin will give him a rod to fish for a day too????

I just saw "Winston Waters," and I agree with you; my favorite part of the film also was seeing Morgan and Brackett fish. |

Carlin wrote: Hi Chris! Sorry I didn't get this post while he was still in Alaska. Once he hit town we were out fishing all the time during his week here. I am just now checking forum posts. He might have been interested in fishing one of your rods. I did show him my Carlin rod and he was impressed with it. We fished Quartz Creek twice and did very well there. That was probably the best fishing he had in Alaska. When we fished the Russian it was a sunny day and the water was very low. Rainbows were hard to find that day. Thank you for your offer. I hope it's not all work and no play for you these days!!!! There are fish to be caught before freezeup! |
