Braided Ginger Quill Nymph |
Lead | ||

Anyone out there still tying a Braided Ginger Quill Nymph, long shank #14? Anyone willing to get a rod maker out of the dog house with his Mother? It's
her favorite fly and she can't find them anywhere. She's still fishing at 81 and I don't want to give her any excuse to quit!

Mike,is that a woven pattern? If it's a woven fly, I'll whip up a few for you, but it almost looks like two different patterns you have
photographed. One fly looks like it has palmered hackle towards the rear of the hook shank and the other doesn't . You can see some of the woven flies I do
on my profile page under flies. Email me at kayak fly fisher @ yahoo . com .( No spaces.) and maybe I can get some more specifics.

Whewww, these are a treat
I think this took me 45 minutes, and its
still unacceptable! Looks like maybe yours are tyed with floss or silk? I used cotton cross-stitch stuff my wife saves for me. Its a little too fuzzy. The
thorax is a nightmare to get the taper shaped properly, wonder if they used lead to build it up so high?
I wouldn't want to do a dozen of these, god bless the guy who does. No wonder they are so hard to find CJ

Which brings up a good question. How heavily weighted were the ones you had?
Catskilljohn, that looks good. I build up and taper the underbodies on woven flies with size A tying thread and then move down to a 8/0 to tie off the headwhen I'm done. For the weaving, if you want to, you could use rayon embroidery floss, which is less fuzzy, or use dubbing wax to tame the fuzz on the cotton floss before you weave.

Those look like the old Hank Roberts hellgramite-style flies from CO. They used floss for the woven body. Bet you could locate some old ones on the internet.
Dan Bailey's Mossback flies were similar and they might still be making those.

The top one's a Hank Roberts ginger quill nymph. The bottom one's a copy. I had two up until a week or so ago when I sent them out to a guy in
Lakewood, CO who wanted to tie some. He sells flies on the J. Stockard fly market, so once he gets the pattern to the point where he's satisfied with it,
he may sell them as well. Anyway, it's probably worth contacting him. Here's the thread on the Flytying forum: http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=45440 Send him a PM (join if you need to).
In his blog he writes "Hank Roberts tied his flies with a different set of proportions, I'm tying mine with a more standard set of proportions." If your mother wants flies true to the original, you might want to specify that when you contact him. edited to add: I just sent him a PM with a link to this thread - as close to an introduction as I can give you.

You are correct, the flies she has came from Hank Roberts shop from the mid 60's. My mother had about 3 doz. and now only has 2 left. If any of you fly tyers are into tying 2 doz. give me a call @800-354-5050 and we can workout the details. |

I'd like to try tying a few of the braided nymph patterns, can the tyers here suggest any good reference material to help me get started?

Oliver Edward has a DVD that beautifully illustrates different weaving techniques. It is a bit pricey, but worth it. The DVD title is "Essential Patterns
with Oliver Edwards, Woven Flies volume 2.

Please excuse my ignorance, are woven flies the same as "furled" flies?

To me furled implies twisted as in a "furled" leader. It is done by twisting and putting a tension on the twisted components that holds it together. I have heard that ropes are furled and cords are woven but over a core, but I don't know if that is a steadfast rule of thumb. Woven flies are either done with a series of knots (overhand knot weave) or "lashing" the strands of thread with one over another to hold them in place. I've never heard of a furled fly, but I guess the original serendipity with the zelon twisted and then palmered could be considered furled. Clear as mud?

Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions to keep my Mom fly fishing at 81! May we all be so lucky.
Hey Gnome ~ do you have any kind of tracking number for the samples you sent back on 8/29? Been to the PO every day and they haven't arrived. The 2 samples she gave me are on long shank #12 & #14. Much appreciated, Mike |

I loved woven bodies as a kid, back in the seventies. I wove everything, mainly because no one else was doing it and i couldn't tie a dry fly to save my
life.
I still carry a couple i tied back then, on size 24 hooks. I had much more time and ambition back then. |
