ATH reel advise requested |

Looking for some advice on an original ATH reel (not the Dutch Reel versions). I'd like to own a single example. Should be lightweight and balance a very
lightweight rod (~3oz) in the 8ft range. LHW, of course, or user reversible. Line capacity should be for 3, 4, or 5wt or a combo. Clean lines for which Ari is
duly famous, but without being busy. I prefer reels with a narrow spool / overall width, and which avoid that open gap between frame and foot like you see on
centrepin reels. Rare and collectible OK. Pics great if you have them, or I can Google. Thanks for any input. Chris

cdmoore wrote: I think the classic ATH reel is still the F-series. The F-1, also called the River Traun, will handle a 3 or 4 weight line and truly is classic Ari. Your concern about the gap between the frame and the foot could be an issue. I'm not familiar with centrepin design, but the F-series does have a gap due to the design of the frame/reelfoot. If that's an issue, there is a less common model, referred to as the C/I Silent, that is also classic Ari. This one will probably cost you more and is more of a 5/6 weight reel, however. I'm not set up to upload photos, though I hope to have that changed in a few weeks, but certainly Googling ATH F-series or something similar would bring up photos of that model without much trouble. Understand that there a lots of one-off and extremely limited edition Ari reels, but if you want something classically Ari I would assume you want something that received at least some distribution. |

ATH F1 Traun - a superb reel
You are not able to change from lh/rh - which require a new centersection, normally exchanged with the shop converting. (easy/fast done if you have the part and the tool required) Hold 3/4 line without problems - can't say if it will balance the mentioned rod. A good suggestion and a highly recommendable (but hard to find) reel. Reeldane

bobbeegee wrote: There you go. The right reel, setup to retrieve the correct way for you, and in the anodizing colors in most demand for that reel. One other point: ATH Design in Holland made Ari's reels for many years. Eventually, the company was sold to a Danish firm (the details are not important here.) The Danes started their F-series serial numbers at 4000. Therefore, any F-series reel with a serial number of 4000 or more may be said to have been designed by Ari, but it is not made by the company that Ari owned and/or worked for while he was with them. If that would be important to you, then buy accordingly. If not, forget I brought it up. |

Hi
It's my reel currently listed in classifieds. I agree that this is probably one of the most classic Ari-reels, and one of the first that was commercially available. It's best suited for 2-4 weight lines though. The ARAS C/I was mentioned above and I'm posting a picture of a specimen below. Good luck hunting, they are fascinating items! |

Was I the only one who had experiecned line thru spool issues ?
Maybe it was because of the early stiffer 444 lines. I found my reel was difficult to use. I also had to stick a round indicator ball toothpick in the drag slot to keep it sounding correct. cheers, Brian

Reeldane wrote: I spent a lot of time writing that post. I tried to make it very clear that the Danish reels are Ari designed, but not Ari made. There are several important differences between them and the collectors, not me, have determined that the Holland reels are more desirable. Frankly, if you turn to the Remco, I think for fishing purposes, the addition of the pillar at 6:00 makes the Danish version a better way to go. However, collectors consistently want reels made by the designer even though I'm quite sure Ari didn't make nor assemble most of the reels during the ATH Design Holland years. But to specifically answer your question: Yes, the ATH Danish reels are Ari designed, but he was not with the company that produced them and that does make a difference to collectors. Seamasters made by Captain Mack bring more than those made by Robbie. We even had a thread on here recently about guys trying to determine if their Bogdan was made by Stan or not. Since ATH reels are made on CNC equipment I don't see why it should be the same, but it is. A serious Ari collector will want all of the models from both the Holland years and the Danish years, but our thread starter here simply wants a representative reel. |
