Lapping ferrules- how do you do it? |

I'm not at all satisfied with how I am lapping ferrules. I'd be interested to see how you guys do it. I've seen some really nice ones on this
forum. Thanks.

This may help you. You can also do it in a lathe.

I make my own, so this may or may not be of help... but here goes.
After I make the female, I use a set of blind hole laps with 1-2 micron lapping compound to lap the inside of the female. You have to keep the lap moving constantly in and out of the female or you'll end up with a ferrule that's bell shaped on the inside. I take down the slide on the male in a lathe with a #4 Grobet file until it just starts into the female, then I go to a #6 file until it is a VERY tight fit. The files help keep the surface of the slide even, plus they take off a good amount of material in a relatively short time. So, I have them "pre fitted" before I mount them on the rod. After they're on the rod, I finish fit them starting with 600 grit, then 1000 grit Wet-n-Dry sandpaper. It only takes a few minutes, since you have them down to within much less than a thousandths of an inch of final fit with the files. Bob |

I'm having trouble getting the beautifully shaped tabs when I dress the tabs. Any suggestions? The web site referred to above does not really have much
detail on this. Thanks again.

Stephen, what kind of result are you looking for? | #4 | ||

Simple serrations? Something fancy?

Stephen,
Do you have Ray Gould's books? If so, he details a neat method of crowning ferrule tabs there. If you don't have that info, let me know and I'll get it to you. Harry |

I just buy the cheap nickel plated ferrules. Three, 3 piece rods and they have worked great. I am waiting for one set to not fit right but I think I have about
20 dollars in ferrules for those three rods.

Stephen;
I just use strips of 1,000 grit wet/dry cut as wide as the male ferrule is long. Wrap the strip around the male and twist a dozen or so time, wipe clean and try the fit. I mostly lap the full length of the male until I get it tp fit halfway or so then concentrate on where it seems to need it most. Some ferrules ar straight as an arrow, others the female seem to taper just a bit and the end of the male needs more work than the rest. Sometimes if I get a set that the males are way big on I'll start with 600 until the male seats about 1/4 pf the way then switch to 1000. Also, I finish the fit with 2000 and 0000 steel wool . It sounds tedious and it is a bit, but I've been using Uniferrules from REC for quite a while and they seem to come with a closer fit than others I've used. john |

canerodscom wrote:Harry I assume you mean Gould's "Constructing Cane Rods?" I couldn't find a page where he goes into detail about the tabs. Could you refer me to a page #? Thanks as always |

I still lap my ferrules on a very fine stone.
I lap the full lenght on the stone turning the ferrule as I lap then finish off with 0000 wire wool. The tabs are shaped and dressed on a dremel and diamond cut off wheel again polish with wire wool Gary

Hi Guys, I use a mike and a set of 'small hole gauges.' If I'm building from scratch like quad ferrules I have more stock to remove so I may turn
a little off in the lathe. I have been sizing and fitting on a set of mandrels I got from Jeff Wagner. They help to hold concentricity. Check size often. I
use Grobet files and sandpaper in 200- 600 grit then steel wool or Crocus cloth. I turn the ferrule station with a tool post grinder. I haven't been
'crowning' the tabs. Jay Edwards

I've gotten my best results with a small triangular file, getting more even triangles than I did with sandpaper or a Dremel. Then feather down on a drill
rod in the lathe. H
