On a side note, I was also able to hear John reiterate his philosophy that rods should meet current fishing conditions, current flyfishers, and current advances in materials/methods, where appropriate. Also, John plans to continue to make rods as long as he is able. If you should want to try one of his rods, he will do his best to find you a customer(s) close to your home, that you may contact.
John is a gentleman with passion for his work and this sport, standards for his craft, pragmatism, genuine esprit de corp, and generosity. My conversation with him nurtured my spirit and I will savor the memory of it.
If any of you may pics and experiences of fishing his rods that you can share, please do. Any any stories to celebrate his continuing life/work would be welcome.
Rodmakers such as John, Bob Summers, Walt Carpenter, Nunley, Lancaster, Ron Kusse, Mark Aroner, Parker, Beasley, John Gallas, Whitehead, Ron Barch, and others are the "roof" over the head of next generation of rodmakers, many of them equally famous in this grand community of bamboo enthusiasts. Though they don't seek praise and often gloss over it, within our community we should not do less than tell their stories, show their craft, enjoy them and their rods . . . all as a ways of celebration. So say we . . . so say we all!
