Winston 7' 3/2 3wt. | #1383 | ||
|
Here's my newest rod a rare Winston(Brackett) 7' 3/2 3wt. 2 3/4 oz. hollowbuilt hex. According to Glenn not many of these 7' 3/2's(latter
developed taper) made in comparison to 2/2's. The rod exhibits a wonderful medium fast action which will throw in close or out 50' with ease. A perfect
dry fly rod for the Firehole/Upper Gallatin and other smaller waters in the YNP.

Mark,
Thanks for the nice comment and your Eric Peterson 3wt. is one sweet rod too. This is the first 3/2 I have in my quiver of 4 3wts. with a Mahogany(Banjo's FET taper) 7'2" 2/2 on order. I've only seen one other Winston for sale which was in Lisella's Spring 2009 catalog. I looked thru 80 dealer catalogs, dealer websites and Langs auctions to see how many have been for sale. Sweetgrass previously mentioned in this rod is making a fine example of this rod as well they should since Glenn developed it. I really like its medium-fast action since it fits my casting style perfectly. If I see one I'll let you know. Dennis |

Lovely, almost cute, set up Dennis!
That Winston Perfect reel sure is handsome isn't it? Isn't it a tad on the heavy side for such a short & light rod? |

Jay,
Your right and the 2 7/8" Winston is loaded with 4wt. The actual reel I used to cast it was a Robichaud 2.75" with a 3wt. Syllk. The Winston reel most often is mated with my Winston Quad 7'9" 4/5wt. which gives it perfect balance in my estimation. Dennis |

Dennis - Thank you for the pics of another beautiful Brackett era Winston. Have you had an opportunity to cast any of Glenn's 7' 3 weight hex rods in
2/2 configuration for purposes of comparison? Was Glenn able to change the taper of the 3/2 rod to make for a faster action? I have always wanted to have an
opportunity to handle a few examples of the older Winston "leetle feller" rods and wonder how they might compare to these more recent creations from
the hand of Glenn? Thank you for any insight. Regards.

Corcut,
I've never handled 7' 2/2 to draw a comparison. I' always wanted a " leetle feller " but I was always a day late and penny short. I just know from talking to him I came away with the impression the 3/2 was a faster taper than the normal smooth medium action. The fastest Winston I ever owned was 8' 4oz. 2/2 built in 1946 by Stoner. Merrick's I've owned are more medium action with the exception of my 8' 3 3/4oz. 4wt. which is med-fast. I know since Glenn started Sweetgrass he's tinkered with some of the tapers to make them faster. I once a Winston Brackett 7'6" 2/2 4/5wt. which was specifically built for a owner who wanted it to be med-fast. Dennis |

Dennis,
I can tell you that you are one lucky guy. I have the exact same Brackett /Winston rod and it is a powerful little rod that is a joy to fish with for cutts and brookies up high. Enjoy it. Bob |

Gorgeous, Oldfishbrain.
Here's my newest one and I'm really excited about it -- a 7 1/2-foot 3/2 Gale Creek 3-weight, by Dennis Stone. I can't wait to try it out.
