Can anyone give me any tips on how to machine a nice tapered EVH style reel foot? I'm not sure how to go about getting the radius for the top of the foot.
Is this done with a normal end mill or flycutter?

Ah- less not we forget how to use the search feature. Mark Shamburg's post from Feb 08 was very helpful. I think I can produce a foot like that with my
lathe & milling attachment.
Any input on ways to make a foot without the center hole would be greatly appreciated. |

A couple of options come to mind. You could make the foot an 1" longer and drill a hole at each end to mount to the mandrel. After turning, you trim the
ends off to leave the solid reel foot. You could also make your mandrel so the foot side mounting holes attach to the mandrel. The screws that hold the foot to
the mandrel would take some stress though so this might be a riskier option. I make reel foots for my brass reels with a piece of 3/16" by 1/2" brass
bar and shape the foot profile by hand with a small sanding belt (1" Delta) and files. It works surprisingly well. I can make a foot quicker than I can
set up my lathe. Cheers, Michael

This isn't a Vom Hofe replica, but still may help. I have made a reel foot generally to the AFFTA standard, http://www.rec.com/html/affta.html. You can see a photo of the fixture here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/quilts_by_joyce/4017732600/. It goes on a rotary table, and the
top of the foot is milled. The upright block is inclined at 7.5 degrees to get the correct taper. The side of this block to which the foot mounts was milled
to a cylindrical shape, to fit the foot bottom. This was done while the block was mounted upside down to the fixture base. I clamped the foot with a cap
screw, but I think that a c-clamp would work if you didn't want a hole in the foot.
