A little about Gus Nevros .... he started around 1970 in Long Island and made about 200 rods in his career as a builder. His most prolific years were in the late '70's-early '80's when he made rods for Eric Leiser's Fireside Angler. His rods cost about $600 in 1980 which was the same price T&T charged. Gus put about 100 hours into each hand planed rod. This included 6 coats of varnish he hand sanded. This has always puzzled me because his varnish work ended up as a very thin, albeit perfectly flat coat with sharp corners. Gus had a close association with Garrison. From what Gus has told me I would call it more of a "mentoring" rather than an "apprenticeship". Gus had a very loyal following and many of his customers owned 5-10 of his rods. His rods have always been coveted by their owners and are just now starting to make their way onto the secondary market after 30 years in private collections.
Influenced by Garrison ? If given the opportunity examine one of his rods for yourself and draw your own conclusions.
