Ever Notice that some forum members |

... only use the Classified Section for selling items and seldom, if ever do a posting other than what they have for sale? To me, it sure doesn't follow
the spirit of those "who share a passion for classic rods". Wonder if these individuals have realized that they can get more money and
quicker sales from Classic Rod Forum members than from auctions sales on other sites?

What? I don't see the gripe. You should be delighted that they come here first to sell their items. It gives you first crack at, what may be, a great
fishing collectible. I'll bet you wouldn't be complaining if the guy was selling his grandfathers collection of rare Hardy reels that he just
inherited! Also note, there are a lot of folks that lurk around on this site for a long time and never make a post. They are here to read and learn, not to
make posts just for the sake of posting. As far as "sharing a passion for classic rods", members here can't even agree on what a "classic
rod" or "classic reel" is (I've read past threads on that very subject) so the description of the forum is pretty darned broad.

I don't have a problem with people only buying or selling here. I will say that I am more likely to ignore an ad from someone I don't recognize as a
regular board member simply because I'm a caveat emptor believer.
What I do have a problem with is posting for sale ads outside the classified board - say in Book Talk , just to take an example - or starting a thread on a particular maker's rods in any one of the other boards and then several days later posting a for sale ad for that rod(s) and cross-referencing the original thread to include the comments of other board members (perhaps unknowingly) as "testimonial" to how great the rod you are selling is. At the very least, it seems a thinly-veiled attempt at a number of things including getting around the "no commentary" rule within the classifieds. At the very worst, it's using people.

I don't care if Santa Clause puts up an item for sale on the classified page. The more stuff I see over there, the better it is. To answer the question,
yes I have noticed that some of the classified posts are not from regular guys on the forum.

I like buying from the guys I know through there posting on the forum. But I have bought from total strangers as well.
DrakeBob make a great point and I am more likely to ignore an ad from someone I don't as well. |

On the "front page" it's stated "This forum began as Clark's Classic Bamboo Rod Forum, founded by Clark Davis for all who share a
passion for classic rods. The forum is now owned by Whitefish Press aka Dr. Todd Larson - banjo." .. .which I have believed, maybe mistakenly, is the
main purpose of the forum, not just to buy and sell classic equipment, whatever anyone considers to be the definition of "Classic" to be, so that
those who read, but not post, and those who read and do post, can learn more about their love of the sport..... and yes, I would still be commenting even if
someone who was not a "regular" was selling his or her collection of Hardy, Leonard, Pezon, etc. reels, rods, etc.
Personally, this forum has been a very valuable source of information for me and I've met (in person and via communications) many individuals who have provided an exchange of information, knowledge and materials to make my own fly fishing and fly tying activities to be much more enjoyable. I doubt if I would have ever been able to meet these individuals simply by selling them something. Cheers and Safe Fishing Bob PS - Christion - hope all is well... will send you a recap of my upcoming 6 day camping & fishing trip that starts later this week ! |

A Post for Posting's Sake | #10 | ||
This is true. Hard as it is to believe, I lurked a year before posting, drinking in great gulps of the wit and wisdom of forum sages, which, when I finally did post, I tried to imitate (the sincerest form of flattery and all that). So my early posts were derivative, imitative, and second-rate. Then, when I finally found my own voice, they got worse. Even so, I enjoy the give-and-take of the sort you and I have had from time to time. And like you I don't mind laissez-faire in the Classifieds, although as DrakeBob has pointed out some get pretty cheeky when left entirely to their own devices preparing sales pitches in other sections. Our learning curve improves much more quickly, however, when cash is on the line. It doesn't take long to discover veteran posters whom you like who are also veterans of the Classifieds with a reputation for fairness and reliability. P.S.--It's entirely possible I made this post just for the sake of posting a point of agreement. Why not?

Everyone's new here once. Some may feel uncomfortable trying to participate; newcomers that are just seeking knowledge. But, I like others here, approach a "for sale" item posted by someone with little to no post count with extreme caution. Actually, I usually just ignore it. Other places have policies about posting items in a for sale area; a minimum number of posts seems to be the most common one. The number is normally tied to a key feature of whatever the board is about; a 1911 forum uses "45". I'm not advocating we use that here, but the reasoning is that you are trying to get people to participate in the community before they allowed to sell things. Prevents people registering and their first post is a "for sale". As long as a policy like this is clearly spelled out, moderators are ruthless in whacking for sale posts with fewer than the requisite number of posts and the number is not onerous (something greater than 20 and less than 50 seems ok) this solution seems to be a good compromise. But that's not my call.

I would agree with most that I would tend to buy more from someone whom is a regular poster. If I see a for sale post from someone with say 1 - 5 posts I will
probably ignore it. In most cases that is described as " a rod I just found in my grandfathers attic". I ignore those also..

Hi fellas:
You know, I don't hold a candle to most of your knowledge and experience and I have benefitted from all of you. I only try to chip in when I can actually make a contribution so far be it for me to be critical of any one else. I am still feeling lucky that I have been accepted. Ed Pirie West Topsham, Vermont |

My #1 reason for using the Forum is to read people employing "quotation marks" to "hilarious effect"!

I haven't posted much on sections of the board ~~ but I do appreciate reading the posts. My interests have changed over the last couple of years and my interest in bamboo fly rods has waned as my interests in other areas has increased. I don't have enough "financial resources" to do justice to more than one hobby and I know to finance a new hobby I have to sell an item from the old hobby from time to time. I prefer to sell a bamboo rod here where I know the rod will go to a good home and will be treated with respect and dignity ~~ and it will be appreciated as the maker intended. I hope that philosophy doesn't offend anyone ~~ but if it does it won't be the first time I have offended someone ~~ and I am sure it won't be the last. |

I will add this ~~ I did find it frustrating to belong to a fly fishing bulletin board (not this one) where a very prominent fly fishing author was also a
member. The only time he ever posted on the site was to promote his newest book and to tell us which candidate to vote for for president. I appreciated his
skill as an author ~~ but our politics differed greatly.
