Find a copy of "The Atlantic Salmon Fly" by Judith Dunham and John Clayton. There are so many living and deceased masters in the book, that this is a
good place to start. I don't know if Bill Hunter is still with us or not (no disrespect intended), but if he is he is probably the finest resource on
salmon fly tyers. Many great but less known tyers sold through Bill, and you didn't get to do that unless you passed Bill's imprimatur. Look him up.

Are you trying to collect patterns or tyers?
If patterns, there are a number of great tiers that are recreating the classics. If tiers what period and what type of classic atlantic fly, hair wing, married & mixed wing, 1800's, 1900's, American, Canadian, Scotland, Ireland, England, Norway, or? Attributing an existing fly to a specific 1800's tier is difficult because they were fished rather than collected. Very few flies exist for Blacker, Kelson, Marston, etc. |

Thanks for the info. I admire the beauty of these flies and am intrigued by the skill required to tie them. I'm a fairly accomplished tyer and and have
contemplated pursueing this. Then again, I realize I may be biting off more than I can chew.
I'm seeking competent current craftsman who recreate the classics.

you can tie them ... It's a matter of learning some different techniques and some practice.
Any specific patterns, period or author you're interested in? |

Jeff - Thanks for the pat on the back.
I encourage Bamboownc to give it a go, anyone can learn to tie the classics it's not rocket science and really less involved than the rod and reel making that everyone does on this site. It's a bit fiddly, but after all it's just wrapping chicken feathers on a hook! |

Ken Middlemist was the last of Hardy's full time salmon dressers having spent 10 years at the firm until 1969. He may well be one to approach to furnish
you with a few flies for your collection. In the DVD The lost World of Mr Hardy he is shown dressing flies. Ian Blagburn ( Hardys marketing man for many years)
described Kens flies as some of the 'best in the world'. I agree, he made a set for me, made in the time honoured Hardy way - sans vice. I know Ken
would be pleased to make some more flies if asked.. http://purepiscator.com/a...e_malcolm_hardyfilm.aspx
