I have an idea for making a line guide from an inexpensive source of red agate which is agate finger rings (jewelry). The rings I now have on order are advertised as US size 8-9. A reply from the seller confirmed that the actual dimensions are 20mm I.D. x 24mm O.D. x 5mm wide. Seller also confirmed that they are free of cracks or chips. My plan is to machine a bezel with a lip to capture the ring and a separate fitted metal closure for the rear. The frame mounting tang will be silver soldered to ring bezel. Since I have no experience at burnishing a thin bezel to capture the stone, I will use epoxy to secure it inside. The thickness of the agate ring will have to be reduced, radiused and re-polished.
Has anyone tried this already? If so, I would appreciate a description of your procedure and results. I also welcome all opinions.
If I am successful with this project, the ring will be used in a reel that has an existing bronze line guide. Don't worry, it's mounted with a screw (not a rivet), so this replacement will not harm any original components and it will be reversible.
Thanks,
gf2
