replating ferrules... |
Lead | ||
|
I seem to recall a thread here or elsewhere concerning replating ferrules to correct looseness. Was almost General science 101 level utilizing a battery,
saline solution, media (in this case coin Silver, or Nickle Silver), and small aligator clips.
Any help? R |

Ron,
the process is easy, the egyptians did it. for better results, can utilize any variable rheostat including toy train transformer. do need the plating solutions and donor metal plates to deposit on the ferrule. regards, jim w |

Dave LeClair up in NY also does ferrule replating for a reasonable price. He did several rods for me and I was very pleased with the results.

Yes, you can do it yourself. It may be worth the effort if you are going to plate a lot (I mean a lot) of ferrules, otherwise I would just have Mike Shay do
them. He has invested in a professional set up to plate and do it right!! No R&D or wasted materials, just send him your stuff. He can even do the ferrules
if they are still attached to the rod.

Mike does a great job, so does Dave Leclair as well as Alan Kube. If you want to do this yourself go to http://www.caswellplating.com click on plating on the top bar and then on Nickel plating kit. It's about $200.00 for the 1.5 gallon kit. You will also need a DC power supply..Caswell sells a 3 amp rectifier for 102.00 or a 5 amp for 125.00. So for a 300.00 dollar investiment you'll be ready to plate. |

Hey, thanks for the tip Dennis. Maybe I'll just forget trying to do it myself and ask the guys in the tool room at the company that I retired from. The
equipment is most likely a little more sophisticated, and they have been doing this for a few years so they may have a grasp of what is involved. And best of
all, some favors are still owed. Now I can spend the $$$ that I saved on a new reel.

I've had excellent results plating small items with the inexpensive Caswell Plug-n-Plate kit.
