I've had it happen often enough that when I am leaving the stream I will leave my line dangle down stream as I exit. Nothing wrong with
"trolling" a soft hackle if it works. But that's just me.

This has happened to me so many times I cannot remember them all. I think my very first hook-up (and long range release, for the good of the fish of course) on
the storied Beaverkill, home of the wiliest Browns and not for the faint of heart, was on a Caddis that was dragging toward the beach as i gazed at what I had
hoped was an Eagle soaring above the river. Turned out to be a Buzzard, what snapped me back to reality was the guide yelling at me to lift the tip.
Now that I think of it, why was a beaverkill guide watching a fly that was putting up a motorboat size wake three feet from the gravel bank? Maybe they know something we do not? |

it happens with nymphs as well. Recently I took a salmon fishing buddy - who had never chased trout before - trouting, when the fish were down taking nymphs. I
was dead drifting and lifting at the end catching little - he was hauling in fish after fish swinging his nymph (or so I discovered when I stopped fishing and
took the time to watch).

Enjoyed reading a few of these accidental hook up stories... then yesterday I let my line drift as a waded around some boulders to a new position. It took a
few minutes to get where I wanted to be. Then I fussed around with a few things in my vest, untangled my staff and swung it behind me then paused to enjoy the
scenery. When I finally got around to gathering my line and getting out the slack for pick up there was a fish on it, 14 inch brown. As soon I realized it was
on, I new I had something to contribute to this thread.
