here's a more modest entry.
Wright +McGill 6'6" 'Featherlite' #4-#5 the rod I learned to fly fish on, restored by me last Winter; my first-ever foray into rodbuilding.
"From my observations I think that most of us spend too much time worrying about our tackle and too little time
learning the intimate characteristics of the fish and streams we fish most."

Wes Jordan owned, (but problably never used) Battenkill 7'6" 4 oz. This rod model, in my opinoin, is the one to own from Orvis.

Mosquito, that is impressive, but ... How could you part with the hand plus of Carlsons or the hand or so of Dickersons you own? I would love to see your rod
list. Any other classic builders in your collection where you have a full hand full? Just amazing! Ric

My Dave Norling hollow built 8´7" 5wt. rod.
It certainly is one of my all time favorite bamboo rods. But it is more for me, some of it rather emotional. Well, I asked Dave to put my name on it, which I never had done on any other rod, and I will keep this one.
As I don´t want that fish to distract you from the rod, here´s another one sans fish (the rod that I am referring to is the one in the middle - the other 2 are Dave´s works also).
Great thread! Keep it up and going. Cheers,

7'10" 3/2 3wt Linnéa | #28

Easy for me. It's my 7'10" 3/2 3wt quad by Erik Peterson of Linnéa Rods. This hollow-built beauty is perhaps the sweetest-casting rod I've
ever had in my hands, and she fishes even better. A stunningly-gorgeous, 2.8oz 3wt, nearly 8' long ... my favorite, for sure.

Is it my favorite rod? I don't know, but it's up there at the top of the list. What it has going for it besides being incredibly beautiful and casting very well is that it came from the hand's of Mike and Kathy (South Creek Ltd.), whom I've fished with and like to consider as friends.Sprucie - same for me
When this Gierach-Best Special taper is on the market (top rod in this pic) I am history, well worm food anyway. If I cannot manage the 8'6" then I will sub the 7' below it for all of the same reasons.
Thanks 'Darling' and 'Uncle Mike'

This is a great post. I guess the rod I wouldn't sell in any case is my Carpenter Mahagony. Only a handful have been built by Walt, and he stopped
building them years ago.

Dean- Yes, I did make it back to Iowa last May. I only fished two days in Iowa though because I made a trip down to the Smokys too. I had planned on fishing another couple of days after that trip, but every time I talked about it Mom got really disappointed so I never went again.
I do have an 8040 now, but mine is a W&M Victory. I had to have
one after you praised them so much! I have it's cousin the
Phillipson Premium too. I do like fishing the Granger tapers.
By the way, when are you going to make it up here????? Aren't you bored with those Montana and Colorado streams by now? Mike |

Carpenter Mahogany | #40
|
Rick, from Reeleasy's post under the Walt Carpenter thread in the Maker's and Manufacturer's Topic Area, the following from literature from Walt
Carpenter mid 90s: "The Mahogany is the result of my desire to create for the angling fraternity, a fishing rod that is enjoyable to own in the off
season as when you are fishing with it. It was inspired by the rods offered by the custom makers at the turn of the last century, and as one customer
observed,'has all the aesthetic qualities of a Stradivarius'. Toned in a rich mahogany shade with chestnut brown intermediate and primary wraps, it
also features very fancy butt signature wraps. The guides are the original English twist, tungsten, bronzed. The fine tips are topped with the original small
loop Perfection tops and the first guide is genuine German agate. The hand made ferrules are made in the traditional waisted, step down style with nickel
silver ferrule plugs. . . . The special 200 year old mahogany used in the slide band seat, has a high finish and is mounted with oxidized, nickel silver reel
seat hardware." I will try to find time to post a better picture when I am at my office. The Mahogany pictured is a 3/2 7'6" 4 wt. A very
small cork grip, likely around 4.75" in length and very narrow diameter at the top of the grip. Surprisingly, I usually don't like small grips, but
this one 'just feels right'. Three other rods that I would not sell/trade: Recently acquired Carlson 7'6" 2/2, a mint Thomas and Thomas
Fountainhead 7'6" 3/2 (arguably, perhaps after the famed S.C. Phillippe Rod, the most beautiful rod I have ever seen, and I actually own one), and my
Gillum 7'6" 2/2 Serial No. 539 (see Martin Keane's comment on the same model he owned, No. 540, at page 117 of "Classic Rods and Rodmakers).
So, I actuallly have 4 rods I really don't ever want to part with). Anyway, the Mahogany is a special rod by Mr. Carpenter. Regards, Ric
