a Travel Rod recommendation.. |

Looking for a recommendation on a universal Travel Rod. Something to follow me on business trips or any random trip that comes up. I have a winston 5 piece/5wt
thats great but I'm thinking I'd like a 3 piece bamboo. Just curious what you guys might think would be a good universal rod. I was thinking something
like a Payne 198 made by a modern builder. I'm curious what you would pick?

I purchased one for my 40th Birthday. Good middle of the road rod that can handle large fish and wind while still light enough to catch 8 inch brook trout.
The rod casts like a dream and the finish work is very well done. The three piece design goes on the plane with no issues. The rod takes a 444 WF6 Peach line
for me. Hope this helps.

Glenn Brackett makes a very nice 7'9" 5 weight in a 3 piece called the Crossover. On the fast side of medium IMHO.
Good Luck, Rolf Brook Trout are God's way of reminding us everything is going to be all right.

Take a look at Dennis Stones 7'9" 4 piece 5wt.
I've heard nice comments about this rod. http://www.stonerodco.com/about/

I have a Taransky 5/6 weight that packs down into a 32 inch case. I had it made specifically for traveling.

How small do you need it to pack down?
What line weights do you need to cover? What kind of fishing are you likely to be doing for travel and where? The windy West? New Zealand? Japan? Europe? Size of flies that will be fished? How much reach will you likely need? How much are you willing to spend? To risk with the airlines and general travel risks? What about a glass travel rod? What reel would you use and how might that affect the balance / construction of your rod? Would you feel comfortable checking this rod? One good piece of advice I received regarding travel gear is to never bring an irreplaceable rod, i.e. a classic, one made by a friend, etc. Stick with rods that can reproduced just in case. Hope this helps, C

Well, I was going to PM you, but I figured I'd go ahead and post here on your thread since I think this falls into the type of rod you might be looking
for. One of the more interesting rods I have is a South Bend 291 - a 4/1, 7.5', 5wt rod that breaks down to 24" sections. It's the type of bamboo
rod that is semi-different, rarely seen, and nice feeling, but it is not a high $$ rod that might cause pain if something happened to it. I used it quite a bit
this summer and the weight and action were very, very similar to the SB 290. I am planning on selling it this winter, but thought I'd at least mention this
type of rod as an option for you.
Have fun in your search for the perfect travel rod! Dean D

Thank you guys ... I've been checking out your recommendations. I wasn't going to go over the top. Just a very proper universal rod... the type of
rod to fish by the pond by National airport (if I get out of a meeting early)...or if I'm in Colorado visiting Lockheed Martin I can take a trip to the
South Platte ... and there have been a lot of times when there has been a pond next to the hotel I stay at... I was just looking for a 5 or 6 wt to toss some
sort of fly (wooly bugger or humpy or coachman or nymph) and feel the tug on the line ... it doesn't matter if its a trout, bass, sunfish, carp, chub,
whitefish ... I just like seeing what will bite instead of sitting in the hotel bar ... or just sitting in the room.
like I mentioned, the Winston 5 piece is a nice little rod .. but I'd rather stay with Boo ...and I don't need to pack it too small 3 or 4 pieces will be fine. I was just interested in what you guys enjoy. |

Bob Lancaster will make up a couple of different 5/6 weight rods in four piece on special order. His Big Horn and Bow River models are really sweet. I own the
two piece model of the Big Horn, a 7.5 foot, 5/6 weight and it's a sweet casting rod. The Bow River is an 8 footer. The four piece sold for $950 the last
time I saw it listed, and that's only a hundred bucks more than the standard two piece. Len Codella is a dealer for his rods.

As far as travel rods go the best I have found is the 7'9" 5 wt Daryll Whitehead taper that is a 4 piece rod. I was doubious about it at first
but had Curt Elder make one up and wow, it is fine. Curt got the taper directly from Daryll and the rod is one of the best all-rounders you could hope for in
a travel rod. email me at charles.vaden@comcast.net and I will send you pictures of the rod. Simply stunning. The three ivory ferrule plugs alone will
knock your socks off. Charles

Hi. If you want to send me your email address I will send you a picture of one of the best travel rods you can buy and some info about it. I just can't
figure out how to do it on Clarks.
Thanks Charles |
