I recently was outbid Ebay- For a Black Beauty Featherweight 7', excellent condition all original. Maybe it was a board member. She Went for $1401.00,
alot of sniping going on at the end.. I was prepared to go about $1100.00, and thought that was on the high end, but I obviously was wrong. I know this is a
sweet wand, but does anybody else out there think this is a little high for this. I may not have any other options the next time I see one. Just wanted to
hear everybody elses thoughts.. Better start building up that slush fund.

It must be time for the quarterly "was it worth the price?" discussion. It doesn't matter what we think. All that matters is that someone was
willing to pay what they did to get the rod. There could be a hundred reasons why they were willing to pay that amount. We'll never know.
I'm happy for the buyer because he/she got the rod at a price they were willing to pay. I'm also happy for the seller who is a well-respected member
of this forum. They both won.

Perfectly stated Bob. Win/Win for both seller and buyer.

The high bidder did you a favor, riverwader - way too many better rods, for that kind of money, out there......

But it's really the opinion of the buyer, who spent the money, that makes the difference.

Yep, I agree with you $1401 seems really high. If it matters how you spend your money then be happy you lost.

Why are you starting with the thought that it didn't matter to the buyer how he spent his money?
Not to belabor the point (okay... so I'm going to belabor the point), but let's just suppose... the buyer is a long-time Heddon fan and collector and at one time owned this model, let it go, and now wants it to complete his collection. What would the rod be "worth" to such an individual when the rod finally presents itself and he has the money at hand? Or suppose... a buyer recognizes the rod as one that was in his family at one time and wants to get it back. What would the rod be "worth" to this buyer? I could come up with more of these, but I think these two examples make the point. We have no way of knowing what the buyer's motivation was. Starting with the assumption that he had no idea what he was doing or that he got caught up in a mindless bidding war doesn't hold up under thoughtful consideration. Further, if you start with the assumption that it's just another fishing pole then, quite frankly, $140 is probably too much let alone $1400. Ah, but, we get it... you've never paid too much for a fly rod which is what, apparently, gives you the wisdom and the right to rain on the buyer's and seller's parade. They are never just fishing poles. The very existence of this forum and all that we do here is testament to that.

What Drake Bob has said is true. To try and say what a rod is worth makes no sense. As many have stated, it is worth what ever a buyer is willing to pay. When
I see rods selling for 2,000/ 4,000/ 6,000/ 12,000 and up, do I think they are worth it ? Of course not, but if someone has the money and wants a particular
rod than it is worth every penny of what they spend. That particular rod is not all that common and in that grade and condition is difficult to find.

Drakebob/Grandpoobah of all things cane,
You say what? "Ah, but, we get it... you've never paid too much for a fly rod which is what, apparently, gives you the wisdom and the right to rain on the buyer's and seller's parade." I post and write from my own perspective that for me this rod would have been too much and you decide to insult me because of that? In addition to that you've decided I don't have the financial means to do the same? You may be taking yourself way to seriously. Tim

Well, seeing this was posted under fishing and not collecting even thou thats here nor there..... Plain and simple collectors drive the market and us poor
fisherman have to deal with that. Undoubtedly worth it to the buyer and I'm sure a very pleased seller.

I agree with creakycane 100%. For $1400 there are a lot of fine, NEW rods out there, and you would have a choice of tapers. But then, I'm not a collector,
just a fisherman.

Oldschool - I'd bet Drake Bob or one of his buddies won the rod and, while talking a moderately convincing game about "a rod being worth what a buyer is willing to pay" ---- me thinks someone is being a bit defensive about paying too much. Sounds like a case of the "seconds thoughts" to me, and the frustation taken out on you. Don't sweat it
You are correct - the loser of the auction was the winner.

Y'know creaky... this was headed to bed. But, I guess you haven't had enough. No, I wasn't the buyer and I don't know who was. Whoever it was, he/she deserves to be left alone on the issue. There is a very good chance that they are reading this. The position that you somehow know more than the buyer did about what to pay for this rod is at one time both pompous and petty. Find something more important to do than concern yourselves with what other people write checks for.
