Rich, what kind of spey line do you intend on using? My 3 1/2" is loaded with 100ft. of Rio running line, a 320 gr. shooting head and polyleader and PLENTY of backing. I wouldn't think you would have any capacity problems with this reel unless you're planning on some crazy line. I would think it would work with any scandi line, compact skagit or a Windcutter type short belly with the backing you require, especially in a trout sized line weight. I can't tell you the exact capacity, as it would vary quite a bit depending on the spey line used, but in any event, no problem with this reel. Another idea I've had with a similar rod is to have one reel loaded with a regular spey line set-up, and another, maybe a 3 7/8" Perfect, with a one of the Sage Indicator nymphing lines (an 8 or 9 weight single handed line should be about right on a 4/5/6 trout spey--check the head weights). Use the spey reel rig if you're swinging streamers, and the other reel when nymphing Bow River style. Haven't tried it yet myself, but might be just the ticket. Keith |

i'll be useing a scandi line on it ,somewhere in between a 4 to 6 wt and around 300 to 500 , i don't know what the reel will hold for line , the builder just said if the reel would hold a 9 wt fly line then it would be ok , i'm just wondering if anyone knows or has a old paper saying what these older hardy reels will hold rich

I would wait until you have the rod in hand, then I think it will become clear what you need to balance it and hold your line requirements.

Rich,
How on earth can someone have an "old" paper on what the Hardy Wide drums can hold when these Scandi heads that everyone is now using are relatively new (10 years or so, maybe less). I do know a 3 1/2" Hardy will hold about 200 yards plus a 7/8 Beulah Elixir Spey line. Also handles the 7/8 switch line as well with the same amount of backing. I just used my T&T 11' #7 switch rod for the first time with the Beulah switch line and it casts amazing. You can go from swinging flies with a poly leader to indicator fishing in a couple of minutes. Great to be able to be versatile especially on the great lakes streams that can have a wide variety of water in a short area. Let me know how you do steelheading. Tim |

really all i needed to know was would the 3 1/2 hold say 100 yards backing and a normal 9 wt fly line , if it will then the builder tells me it will work and hold a scandi line around 300 to 500 which is what i need for the rod that i'm getting built do you understand me now tim , let you know how i did steelheading , kicked some ass my friend , take a peek at my website and go to trip reports for pictures , it was a blast , i told ya you should of came instead of going to the wrong part of canada '' quebec'' , rest of us canadians only go there with our honeys for a sweet weekend , i'll call you first chance i get and i just need to know the rough weight of any leaded 3 3/4 reel from around the 30's , see how heavy it is

Hi Rich, you should have no problem getting 100 yds of backing and a 9 wt line on a 3 1/2. I have a couple of 3 1/2 spools and they both have more on them than
that.

I primarily use the 3 3/4 for winter fishing. 7/8 weight rods , Skagit heads from 24-26' long and 540 to 600 grains. I can switch out and fit a scandi
head of 32-34' from 480 -525 grains(more grains and length if I needed it) with no problem. Kevin
