When my meeting was over (the garage sale was just across the street from my office) I went to my car and grabbed some tubes and began checking out what I bought (Oh I also bought some Hardy reels and spools too...honestly I had never heard of Hardy). I opened a tube and the bamboo rod was beautiful. On it was R.W. Summers. I Googled the name and within 2 clicks I was on Bob Summer website. WOW was I surprised to see what his new rods were going for. Now I'm really excited because mine was made in 1974 (I found this out later).
I finished my day at work and headed home with more tubes to open. I asked my son to help me out. He grabbed a tube and pulled out another beauty. He called out "Paul H Young Parabolic 15". Now being from Michigan and a collector of fishing stuff even I knew that name. I knew his rods were special. The rod was dated 1949 and very nice condition like the Summers.
All in all I ended up with over 10 fly rods and some spinning rods although just these 3 were bamboo. The others were vintage fiberglass and some graphite rods from Powell, Hardy, Fenwick, Heddon, Alcedo Micro and more. The reels were Hardy Featherweight LRH? and Prince 5/6 and 2 Medalist 1494's, a bunch of flies and a Remington 11-48 shotgun....a good find for sure.
I've sold the Summers and Hardy Featherweight reel to a collector.I plan to hang onto the Young for now.
Remember I asked you not to hate me. I just thought you would enjoy the story form this past August.just north of Detroit.
P.S. I also ended up with the bottom half of an Orvis Battenkill Impregnated 8 ft, 4 3/8oz #57848 . I'd like to get a tip so this guy can see another trout. Any suggestions ? I called Orvis and they quoted me $650 for just the tip!!!. No way a tip can be worth that...at least not to me.
