Posts: 71 11/01/2009 14:51	Tags : None There have been numerous discussions of fly lines on this forum, but I would like to ask some questions from a different angle. I am concerned not only about fishability but about color. I hate putting fourescent green or orange or bright yellow lines on classic reels. Here are my comments and questions: 1. Cortland Silk: I thought this would be the Holy Grail as far as color goes and they lawn cast great, but I am dissapointed with them on the water. I seem to have too much trouble picking up a longer line and laying it back down again without stripping in first and false casting. 2. Cortland Peach: Many of my rods cast best with this line but the color of the new lines is too bright, almost a bright flourescent orange-pink. The older ones had a more subdued color. Any thoughts on whether the Hook and Hackle lines are similar to or possibly identical to the Cortland Peach? Are the H+H lines a light or dark olive? 3. The Scientific Angler's Supra has a nice buckskin color. Has anyone tried one? Any more experience with the Hardy Marksman (similar color) since it was last discussed? 4. Wulff TT lines are great and the Ivory color is good too but unfortunately some of my rods seem to fish better with the Cortland Peach or with a DT in general. Any thoughts on whether the Wulff Long Belly would do better on rods that do better with a DT line? Thanks for any input.

Posts: 66 11/01/2009 14:59	I have and fish SYLK, Cortland peach, and H & H lines. Except for color, I don't see much difference between the Cortland peach and the H & H lines and I like them both. I have SYLK lines in 5DT and 6DT that I use on a Tonka Prince, a Tonka Queen, an Ed M. Hunter Phillipson, and a W & McG 8642 Stream and Lake. What I have found with the SYLK lines is that they have to be clean in order to float. This may be because they are smaller diameter that the equivalent Cortland or H & H.

Posts: 2363 11/01/2009 15:33	I own many of each (Peach 444, H and H, Sylk, TT's) in 3- 6 weights, Mostly DT and some WF's. In the future, I will mostly buy the H and H lines, which are a nice medium olive, very subdued color. Especially if the price stays as low as it has been. Nothing wrong with the 444 peach, and I have not seen any samples that looked too bright to me (however, have not bought any in a few years)..... The H and H's have held up well, cast well, no problems. And you could not ask for a more subtle medium olive color.

Posts: 3263 11/01/2009 16:08	My opinion only: Wulff TT lines feel light to me. If it's marked "4wt" it doesn't seem to feel like a 4 until there's about 30 feet out (which is spec). If you are constantly fishing close, go up one weight in the line. Keep in mind that a TT line is a continuous taper from the front through 30 feet, then normally to about 45 feet. The Long Belly I believe is closer to a "normal" weight forward line where you have a defined front taper (from 6 to maybe 12 feet), then a level section for the belly, then a rear taper (usually shorter than the front taper), so it may feel better on your rods that like a DT line. RIO makes some very nice lines, they have a bright chartruese color and an olive green that can be very hard to see sometimes. I seem to wind up spooling RIO lines more than anything else; they work well for me. I have not fished a Cortland Sylk so have no input. I have an older 444 peach spooled up that gets fished once in a while and works well. I have not fished a H&H line so have no input. Last SA I used was an XPS; it worked fine. There is usually only a limited amount of damage that can be done by dull or stupid people. For creating a truly monumental disaster, you need people with high IQs.

Posts: 142 11/01/2009 16:21	(1) Wulff long belly is simply the only line that seems to fit my Maurer Old Philosopher. The Ivory color is BORING, and the line does seem to have a lot of memory (usually gets better as day progresses). I did write to Wulff suggesting a less boring color and a welded loop and they said that that may well happen. (2) Cortland Peach. I've used it---works---I agree the color seems to have gotten worse. (3) SA Ultra/ Supra---great color and line works well. I've still got some Ultra in the box/ brand new so I won't be getting to the Supra anytime soon. (4) Hardy Marksman II DT --- it is THE line on my Carlin G-201. A great color [lighter buckskin], slick, low memory---maybe my favorite---I try this line first. I heard it was made by Cortland for Hardy. (5) I TRIED a Cortland Precision Platinum line in 5wt. Why? Nice sage color, taper configuration seemed good on paper, welded loop. It overloaded my two five weights so it is back in the box---might try it again on an expected new 5wt. I concur that the Rio lines are excellent---my 3wt uses one.

Posts: 442 11/01/2009 17:11	The last Ultra 4 line I had gave me fits with memory--line stripped in and dropped at my feet curled up and tangled (it was not twisted, it just curled up)--I liked the color, though. I sent the line back and SA sent me a new Supra, which I took to my local shop and traded in for credit on a Sharkskin, which I love, despite the zipping noise and the light gray color. No memory (let me repeat that--NO memory), loads my rods well, shoots and handles with ease, lands, floats, and lifts from the water with no more ruckus than a 3wt (this is a 5wt), and the finish is non-reflective. Supposedly will last much longer than other lines, so the price may be a bargain in the end (a friend of mine who is a guide and runs through three lines per rod each year, says his Sharkskin made it through the whole season and is still going strong). I do happen to really like Rio lines in general, and the Selective Trout, with its wierd wasp waisted DT profile and dark olive color has been replaced by the Trout LT, with a standard belly, long tapers, and a lighter color (so I've heard). The Trout LT WF lines have a long belly beige head and sage-colored running line. Too bad the DT's are beige. -CC

Posts: 1158 11/01/2009 18:07	I prefer the SA willow (not dark willow...too hard to see) lines. There's also a Hardy line in a very faint blue that I like. It's also comparatively inexpensive. Agree that the Wulff TTs seem light, except for the LB, which seems just right. Prefer the ivory in these.

I have a friend that swears by it, he says that because of the fact that it is clear, he gets more fish. Aaron

Posts: 76 11/01/2009 23:29	I like the brighter colors -sunset orange, peach, chartreuse, mist green - for visability. The subdued olives while great for stealth but disappear at dusk against the streamside foliage. On big water on overcast days, gray lines are invisible to my eyes. As far as brands, I like the SA XPS in DT and WF for light rods. For bigger sticks, I was starting to like the Rio Selective Trout II WF, but it sounds like these are being replaced by the Trout LT lines. Might have to get a couple for the freezer. The Rio Gold WF is another nice line. It's hard to beat the Cortland 444 Peach Classic - its shorter front taper loads rods nicely. The Monic MDT is an interesting line, but the ones I tried sunk like a rock and were 2 sizes too small for their rating.

Posts: 627 11/02/2009 07:47	I've fished the H&H Hi Floater for several years on several rods. Love the med. olive color and price. However, it has a lighter, longer taper in the front and the Cortland Classic peach line performs better for me on some rods. Going up a line wt. in the H&H sometimes works too. Although both are made by Cortland, I find the H&H performs more like the Sylk than the peach.

Posts: 310 01/18/2010 12:18	While many people have said the peach 444 and H&H are the same lines, I'm not convinced--I've had some satisfaction with two H&H lines, I also received same weight H&H lines that were markedly larger in diameter than 444 and sent them back--which is too bad because I love the olive color. My favorite line right now is the SA Supra--which I've used in 5,6, & 7 weight DT formats--it's a very slick line, but like any line you have to clean it often enough--that is the one thing critical to any line's performance, especially if you are doing long pickups. bb Last Edited By: bearbutt 01/18/2010 12:24. I never got around to casting them--when spooling the line and attaching an Eagle Claw leader-link I realized the problem and returned the line--which H&H took back without a question. It could have just been a fluke--but I'm happy with Surpas now and don't plan to change. bb

SA XPS seems to be true to their weight. But I didn't weigh them. 2) Which lines are thin <> regular <> thicker in diameter? Cortland lines are thicker in diameter than SA lines. Rio lines seems to be thicker than SA lines too, but less thicker than Cortland. 3) Which lines are made by Cortland, SA, Rio or Airflo? Orvis lines = SA Sage lines = Rio Hardy lines = Cortland (?) H&H lines = Cortland (?) Wulff lines = SA LL Bean lines = ?

Posts: 942 01/18/2010 13:36	Ivory/white may be boring, but also may be the best colors for a floating line. Visible to the angler, probably less so to the fish. Fishes' coloration generally provides camouflage of a sort, and their bellies tend to be white, or at least light.
