Me: I think a rod gives me more joy in terms of casting, cosmetics, fishing pleasure. I've got a bunch of reels which will be perfectly match with the rods I own and a few that is on order.
What's your preference?

Rod or reel? |

Seems there are folks who prefer getting a nice rod over a nice reel. Or the other way around.

No real preference. I pick examples of each with the other in mind, to produce attractive combinations.

Not really something to 'learn' but to see how people look at our hobby.

I'm more willing to spend the money on a rod than the reel.

Short answer: rod. I have a number of interesting reels that I don't use. I guess I "collect" them. My rods are for fishing, not collecting. When
I fish them, I use reels (Hardy Lightweights, Orvis CFOs) which work nicely, which I don't mind scuffing up, and for which I have spare spools, for
riverside convenience.

For me I would have to say the rod. Although I like to have a reel that "fits" the rod I am using at this point in my bamboo fishing it's all
about the rod.

Very good question and I have thought about this more in the last 5 years. Usually I think about a rod, but now I think about them both because I have discovered that a certain reel that matches up well with a certain rod makes them both look better. Also, I tend to have more rods than reels, so I have been thinking about reels more. |

ROD or REEL | #9 | ||

Rods are nice to collect but theirs so many makers you would need more than 1 lifetime.
I have a few collectables now i look for good fishing tools As for reels i like raised pillar and you have a limited selection in the $300 to $700 range. So i guess what i,m saying i loog for decent affordable fishing equiptment. |

rods shine on the water.
You can pet reels anytime. You want the combination to work, but otherwise, I think it's an apples and oranges comparison
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Give me a great fly rod, every time.
I can find a reel that will work with it that costs $100 or $1,000 or anywhere in between. While I enjoy the aethetics of fine reels (especially when paired with fine bamboo fly rods), that enjoyment certainly does not compare to fishing a truly spectacular rod. And these rare rods are terrific with a cheap knock-off reel or the finest Dingley. |

I love bamboo rods and I love a well made reel, but I'll take a beautiful bamboo rod over a reel most days!

It's never been a question in my mind.
Even though I'm a tool junkie...it's the rod, when it comes to bamboo. With graphite, it's the reel first! Funny how that works isn't it. (And I'm sure not saying that b/c it's P.C. to do so on this forum.) Some of you guys who post good shots of your rods always get me stirred up inside. It's ridiculous...

That's an easy one for me, rods hold a certain mystique and each of the really good ones give back a special delight. You would think I was talking about a
lady . . .
I still have a long list of rods to fish before I die. Jeremy its not that ridiculous . . . not among this group. |

What is to be learned from your question? We learn the preferences of the members--like asking "LHR or RHR?". I definitely go for the rod and there is a limit on what I'll spend on a reel. For the fishing I do I can honestly say that the reel has never effected any result. I could have been using a $99 Battenkill or a Plueger for all it mattered. I aim slightly higher than this. The rod I feel and notice. I have let the reel deter me from ordering a rod, ie, instead of ordering a $3000 rod from company X I reason : I'd rather have a new Maurer, a Bougle, new line, and cash for a road trip---so the reel entered the calculation.
