How much is the value of a rod effected by having a replacement tip (assuming the rod was originally a two tipper)? How likely is it that a truly matching tip
can be made considering taper, bamboo material, and color? If a replacement is made how can the power fiber structure be matched?

Andy, the technical aspects are best addressed by the rod makers, so I will leave that to them. With regard to value, the consensus around here (and I agree
with it) has always been that the value for collectible purposes is the same as it would be for a one tip version of the rod; I would say a 30% difference give
or take. Any incremental value above that owing to the second tip is for fishing/utility purposes only. That will be minimal and depends largely on the rod.

Bob,
I generally agree with what you've said. My exceptions would be 1) if the new tip were made by the rod maker if it is recent rod and 2) in the case of a classic, if the tip were made by the perceived "disciple/student" of the original maker, such as Bob Summers making a tip for a Paul Young rod. I'm not saying that the rod would have the same value as one that was all original, just that the drop in value might be more around 20% to pull a figure out of my ... hat. |

Sprucie, you're quick on the draw and I agree with you. I wasn't considering a tip replaced by the original maker or a disciple. I think you did a
good job of pulling the 20% out of your ... hat. Pulling it from anywhere else was a bit more than I wanted to visualize this late on a Friday, so thanks for
that.

To be the proverbial contrarian, it is my opinion that a correct, professionally made and closely matched replacement tip (with original ferrule) adds a bit
more than "zero" to the value of the one-tip version of most any rod.
Perhaps not as much as one made by the original maker's disciple or descendant, but more, in any case, than merely "nothing".

I don't think you're being a contrarian at all, Scott. I don't see where anyone said it would be "zero" or "nothing" from a
fishing or utility standpoint. It doesn't add anything, in my opinion, to the value of the original one tip rod as a collectible.
I guess you can argue that the second, replacement tip is an insurance policy of sorts and helps you insure that the value of the original one tip rod is preserved, but that doesn't add to its monetary value. It only helps to preserve what it would have been anyway. And if you rotate the tips (original and replacement) faithfully, that insurance policy is only in force 50% of the time...

Thanks, Bob.
And I do understand your point. But as both a fisherman and a rod collector--and to put it another way--I'd personally rather have, and would attribute both more "collectible and fishable" value to, a rod with a well-made second replacement tip than one without same. But it's just another perspective or opinion. It's probably worth what you paid for it!
Scott

I had Bob Summers replace a tip on a Summers 856 that was broken when I bought it. I asked Bob to pull the old ferrules, tiptop, and guides from the broken tip
to use it to build a replacement. When I got the rod back, I couldn't tell any difference in color, wraps, taper, and feel between the two tips. I even
asked poudre1 (Dave Lyons) to guess which tip was the new replacement; asking him to look for color match, wraps, hardware, etc. He picked the original tip
thinking it was the new tip.
Although I didn't expect the replacement tip to be that good, I would venture that some makers can make close matches.

I have a three tip winston lettle feller - Glenn did an entire rod re-build and built a new tip. Not worth as much as an original, but still a go to rod - Of
course I bought the rod right and Glenn did the work 20+ years ago - a friend ever since

I guess it's like a car with a salvage title. Even if it is repaired properly it is still only worth about half of the real value. On the other hand, I
never bought a rod with the intention of reselling it. I buy rods to fish with.

How much more would you pay for a 3-tip version of the 2-tip rod? Add that difference to how much you would pay for the 1-tip version. My guess is that
figure = 70-80% of the 2-tip version. I think this generally works for collectible AND new rods.

Chris,
I beg to differ. (You can beat me up in NJ in January. *G*) The 3 tip analogy doesn't work. There is (or was) a rationale for having a second tip. There really isn't one for having a third. Your second example is better. |
