Here are three Atlantic salmon flies tied by Warren Duncan - Ingalls' Butterfly (upper right), Green Machine (lower right), and Chief Needabeh (lower
left). The two flies in the upper left, hooked to a card that Dunc signed, were tied by Father Elmer Smith, to whom Joseph D. Bates, Jr. dedicated his book
Atlantic Salmon Flies and Fishing (1970).
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 495 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Thanks for the above information. I should have included that I have already made a thorough seach of the web.
I'm looking for with someone a "trained eye" for his flies, sort of speaking. |

The Art of Angling Journal, Volume 2, Issue 4, 2004, has a feature story on Warren. It contains 19 pages of very high quality color photos of his flies, all
labeled. Excellent reference.

warren duncan , god bless his soul ,
when i was younger , he was a great salmon teacher for me , always giving me advice , i still have his personal trout net and use it all the time , he left this earth way way to soon , i'll never forget the day he showed me a bogdan salmon reel and he put a drill on it to spin it wide open in the back of his shop , he clamped that bogdan reel down tight on a broom handle in a vise , i never laughed so hard , he had a way about him thats for sure , sometimes i'd meet him on the cains for brookies and he was a good fly tier

I second the Art of Angling Journal....If you don't have a copy let me know, I could probably provide some scans.
I knew Warren through the Streamers@ list on yahoo....he was always good for laugh or giving a good ribbing to other members. I finally got to meet him in person at a local TU meeting. When I introduced myself he made me feel like we'd known each other for years...he was that kind of person. One day I went to my mailbox and there was a package from Canada...didn't remember ordering anything, I opened it up and found these inside......

While far from an expert on Duncs flies i have seen a few tied and have handled many more. Three things kind of jump out at me and i'am somewhat certain
that these are Duncs. First, the quality of the hook. I can't think of too many instances where I've seen Dunc tie on a 36890
He had a thing for fine hooks, especially if it was a gift or presentation.
Next is the butts on the Undertaker and the Green Machine. Dunc started with a small tag, first color of butt and then a larger, bulkier second butt. You can
see this in all the pics here, even the sleek Green Machine he gave to Quash. A clear example of this is in Dunhams "The Atlantic Salmon Fly".The
last thing is the size and shape of the head,, this just screams Warren Duncan in my opinion. He was amazing to hang out with and talk to,, and to watch him
tie was something truly incredible. I miss him too lads, he was the greatest salmon fly tyer their has ever been.

I've hesitated replying to this query about identifying 'Dunc's flies'.
Having visited with him a few times a decade or so ago I too acquired some flies and memories. Without finding the flies and opening the box, I can virtually assure you they will smell of cigarette smoke. Everything in that shop had a nicotine yellow cast to it - walls, photos, flies in the bins, tying materials and my memory. What a wonderfull, generous man he was! |
