Posts: 189 11/08/2009 19:59	Tags : None firstly let me say that i have posted many topics on this site some have been deemed sexist , some have been deemed inappropriate and some have been deemed too critical but all have been posted in a humourous manner because lets face it we all like a laugh , secondly i would like to point out that if you buy something off a dealer and you realise afterwards that you have either paid too much or didnt notice a particular flaw then that is YOUR fault , dealers are there to supply goods and they will be only too happy for you to inspect the goods thoroughly before purchase , so if you miss something then its your problem and not the dealer..if it wasnt for the dealers our wonderful business of buying and selling wouldnt exist..what follows is just a humourous observation of things i have been told over the years..when a dealer tells you one thing he invariably means something entirely different......this topic could run and run and i have been banned from this site already but here goes....p.s..all comments or similar stories are very welcome before this topic gets pulled by the powers that be........(unless they have had similar experiences)...enjoy these quotes from the many dealers i have encountered!!! "this must have been a very early one or a prototype because i have never seen another like it "...in other words , i havent a clue what this is!!! "there is a lot of social history with this reel"...in other words .."its engraved with the original owners initials" "if this reel could talk , oh the stories it could tell"...........the line burns are cutting through the pillars!! "i seen this one and i immediately thought of you!!"...........im gonna easily double my money on this one.!! "those are special screws , not seen on many of these models"............they are crude replacements.. "thats the original spitfire finish".............my new sandblasting machine works a treat eh!! "made in alnwick"............mass produced in korea!!! "small hairline crack on the backplate , otherwise in fine condition"................................ the only thing thats holding it together is the layer of varnish on it!! "original ivory handle"...............................original ivorine handle "early un-catalogued transisional model"........3 reels rolled into 1 "£350 to you cos i know its what you like"..........................£150 to anyone else.. "i have seen that retailers name on a couple of other reels"........i have never seen that name before , it must be the original owners name!!!" "they made that many reels and they made them in all different styles" .......................but they never made them this way!!! ok guys im tired and this is where i leave it up to you to follow this thread , no doubt once i have had a good sleep i will remember others but for now...goodnight

Posts: 622 11/09/2009 05:32	Thanks Nacky! Some of these are truly priceless! It's basically the same in every field of collecting, and to a certain extend I feel it's part of the game. Couldn't agree more about the caveat emptor principle, but... there's a difference between being able to inspect the goods yourself (auction, vintage tackle fair) and having to rely on a description (online). The last category makes it relatively easy for "dealers" to play the game dirty. As a novice reel collector I've experienced a steep learning curve, not knowing what to look and ask for, and simply not being aware of the many species of predatory fish that roam under the surface. Being able to build up a relationship of trust with fellow collectors, to ask for and give advice about (potential) purchases and warn eachother whenever necessary is what makes places like this forum so valuable. If you love the look and want to fish it but don't give a damn about collectibility or re-sale, then your criteria for purchase and price are (or likely should be) totally different from a pure collector who has no intentions of putting the same reel on the water. This is true for an old fishing reel, an old house, a new laptop, or a new car. Maybe even a spouse. C "If you finish in 7 days, I'll pay you for 10.
