Have you changed your $ spending habits in the last year?
I have no money to buy useless extravagances, so I only buy bamboo fly rods. Has it affected your fishing? See photo below.
Why do you feel the way you do? See photo above.
When do you think you will return to your old ways? Never.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over 495 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

My family has definitely changed its spending habits, because of salary cuts and unpaid furloughs. Our adult children also have felt economic stress and we
have tried to help them wherever possible.
I have cut way down on my tackle acquisition and have sold quite a few rods and reels. The furloughs are a mixed blessing, of course. Though they are unpaid days off, they give me the opportunity to hit my favorite streams on weekdays when the fishing pressure is lower (except of course that other guys are also on furloughs or enforced days off of other sorts). However, while we might be watching our spending, we are pretty lucky in that we are both employed, making decent salaries, and still have health care benefits and retirement. |

I've bought more tackle at a steal than any recent year. So if anything my spending has increased. Rank evil opportunism on my part .........although one
rod bought from a good friend will be sold back to him for exactly what I have in it once he gets back to work... well exactly what I have in it plus one adult
beverage....

I don't know about gear purchases, but the usual trend observed in license sales is that people fish more during tough economic times. It's free and
less stressful than thinking about job problems. I figure as long as I have at least one rod, a rifle, and a shotgun I always have some way to provide for the
family and there is nothing more calming than being on the creek fishing or in the woods stalking game.

I'm VERY lucky in that my wife and I retired a few years ago and had been able to put some savings in stable investments ..... thus, I'm probably
fishing more the past year or so than I ever did. Have never bought many expensive cane rods, as I prefer to purchase blanks and assemble them myself.
Tying my own flies has probably saved me a bunch of loot even though my inventory of materials and supplies have gone up. My reasoning for this comment is that if I purchased flies at $1.50 / $2.00 each, at the rate I lose flies (especially) nymphs, my material purchases are probably less than what it would have cost me if I had to purchase individual flies, plus I get the joint satisfaction of catching fish on my own flies and in being able to fish many fly patterns that, simply, aren't commercially available (i.e. soft hackled dressings). What I have noticed this past year, is that I have often seen many more people on the Cheese Country waters than I've seen in previous years, even though I tend to fish mid-week and not on the weekends. It appears to me that there are quite a few more fly fishers with off-time or more old, retired guys [and an "Elderly Gentleman"(?) or two] that have decided to hit the waters. The quick answer is yes - spending habits have changed. With a couple of teenagers still to go to college I go on fishing trips less often (trout fishing is 3
hours away). To try to make up for this I go fishing for 3 or 4 days instead of 2 days but go less often. I also camp out more often. So maybe the fishing
time is only down a little but I am spending less. What throws things out of whack is a nice rod or reel that comes up for sale at a very good price. This
last summer it was a excellent wood canvas canoe - I had to sell a rod to pay for it..

As Beadhead Boobie stated, there was a pronounced increase of fishermen on Cheese Country streams this year, and, unfortunately, a lot more people keeping a
limit of trout on streams where it was allowed. Can't blame anyone for doing that, especially when times are difficult. I know both my Mother's and
Father's families were frequently fed by fish, deer, waterfowl and game birds a good bit of the time during the 30's and 40's.

I'm not quite as apt to pull the trigger on a rod or reel as I used to be, but, other than that nothing has changed much, if any. My problem is still
finding the time to go fishing. Our house, lawn and landscaping are near 95% complete so hopefully I'll have more time in the future....except that I still
want to build that log cabin for reenacting....need to work on next winters wood, there's deer season then muzzleloading deer season and Momma wants me to
frame in and finish the basement kitchen......geeezzz....makes me tired thinking about it!! I believe I'll go fishin'!

I've actually increased my fishing activity and spending by focusing on purchasing tackle from people down on their luck. Some great deals to be had these
days.

What El Cap wrote may not sound good, but, his buying tackle from someone who needs money is not a bad thing. The seller gets some $$ that may help put food on the table or pay the mortage. Sometimes you need to sell something to get through a hard time. |

Rick/GoFish,
I know who you both are. Let's be honest, both of you saints have done (still doing) the same thing, I am just honest enough to admit it. Next time you want to buy a piece of tackle for full or above retail let me know and I'll accommodate you. I'll forgive this one indiscretion and let you both know; if you ever come upon hard times and need to sell your tackle fast, let me know and I'll buy if you ask nicely. |

Fine, you say you know who I am. I don't know who you are, but if you'd been trading/selling/buying with me, you'd know I don't bottom feed. I've bought and sold a lot of gear on this forum, and don't know of anyone who feels I've done anything unethical or below board. I'll pay the price asked if I want something advertised here, and will accomodate buyers, to a point, if they feel my asking price is too high. That's a market, not attempting to take advantage of someone in trouble, as you stated in your post that you were so happy with doing. gofish |
