anyone here fish for Steelhead regularly on their older bamboo rods (such as an old montague, for example)?

Tempting Fate with a WMGranger | #1

Howdy - Not steelhead but when I lived in Alaska, I used to fish for fresh-run Silvers with a 9 1/2' WM Granger Stream and Lake. Believe it or not, I even
figured out how to rig it up with a downrigger 'cause we would fish from a boat in the bay in Valdez and the schools would come in at about 20' or so.
I lived in terror that I would get torn up but it never happened .. just don't get to froggy playing off the butt and get to the net as quickly as
possible. I did catch a very tired (spawned out) King salmon in a stream once on the same rod but it was unintentional (I was fishing for Pinks) and all I had
was a trout net .. finally pooped him out and got him to the beach. I'll admit that a fresher King would have likely torn me a new one .. Assuming that
it's not your first rodeo with large fish, I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to fish steelhead with a bamboo rod - just be sure you use one built for
larger critters ,,

well, here's what happened...
me fighting the fish after the break
the fish
the break
I really think that there was a serious weak spot right there (it was a pretty old rod, most likely a montague). Although I had hooked up with a very hot fish earlier and it did great until that fish came unbuttoned... the rod had been refinished in the past so it's possible that covered up a problem area...who knows...either way, it was fun as hell!!!

Darn ... nice fish, cool reaction ... and a story with pictures that will last a lifetime. Hope you kept the splinters .. All I got for my bamboo salmon
fishing escapades was a freezer full of fish that are long gone.

I did once. I was determined to catch Steelhead on cane and so bought this old Montague and caught this one. After that year, the private property I fished
on was sold and my Steelhead fishing stopped. It was a gas using cane though.

I've used 4 different cane rods for that very thing.
Orvis 8' 4 3/8oz Heddon 9' Deluxe 2 3/4F Its the 902113 for a 7/8wt W&M Granger 9050 Mike Brooks 8 1/2' Salmon and Steelhead Hollow Built rod 7/8wt landed a 35 lb. Salmon with this one. Also a side note Dr. Carey landed a 126 lb. Tarpon with his Granger 9053 |

Nice Fish Drew!!
In the past on the Desch. I've used a 9 foot South Bend #59 and handled steelhead well, but dont use it that much anymore, I have used recently my 9
1/2' Granger Victory and my 9' Heddon Black Beauty both handle summer run well.

Not a steelhead, but this 27" LL Salmon was brought in with a 6' 2 oz. Lee Wulff Midge rod. Bamboo is seriously tough stuff.
The Salmon was returned unharmed -- the lamprey became mink chow. AgMD

NICE!
I see you appear to have a reel foot fit challenge on your hands there - I had to get my cork barrels replaced, and had more functional slide-bands fitted at the same time. Made a world of difference. I took one of mine up to Labrador for bigger brookies after it was fixed - had a blast with it, using a TT6F and size12 white Wulffs. Tight Lines! Alistair |

Actually, I landed a 45 pound fresh Fall Chinook on a 8'6" 8 weight. No problem. And lots, as in well over 100, Steelhead on that rod and a 7 weight
version of it. Bamboo puts me in touch with the fly, ticking bottom or being almost imperceptibly stopped in a drift by a Steelhead. You simply cannot do that
with graphite, it kills the "feel".

Alistair,
You spotted that reel seat bandage right off. One of this winters projects is to replace the seat corks. I am considering making some proper aluminum slip rings for it. For the short term, I wrapped some surgical tape on the corks to bush them up a bit. Ugly but functional. I have been fishing this with a 6 wt wf Orvis Superfine line. The short front taper suits the rod quite nicely and it throws surprisingly heavy hooks. AgMD |

Right rod, right reel | #17

I have started using a Gene Edward's 10' #75 Deluxe which works fine, lots of reserve power and a beautiful fighting butt....but I use a Pate Anti
Reverse salmon reel on it, as I do on all my rods that I expect big fish to be caught...imo, its that sharp impulse that will happen that brings a rod beyond
its carry capability for only a moment maybe, but one that can break the rod or tippet. I have had rods blow up on me, typically on short line which stresses
the rod at its maximum...until I started using the anti reverse and since then have never have had a rod break and tippets also hold up...there's just
something unique about using a rod on Deer Creek fish that makes it worth all the bother... dj

Anti-Reverse Reel | #18 | ||
|
dj's comments are insightful regarding the use of an anti-reverse reel when using a bamboo rod for big fish. With regards to my earlier post regarding
fishing for salmon in Alaska with a WMGranger, he reminded me that I also was using a Pate anti-reverse reel (mine was a "Trout" model, but they are
almost identical). I also bought a McNeese anti-reverse reel for the same purpose but I thought it was too purty to use and never mounted it up .. sold it a
couple of weeks ago to a Board member. Anyhow, I certainly agree that a good anti-reverse reels adds a margin of safety to the process ..
