Got the Call from the 'Boo Boys Today |
Lead | ||
|
I got the call from the Boo Boys today......my number is up to get a rod in the production process.....18 months ago, when I got a place in the schedule, I
thought I knew exactly what I wanted.....a 7' 3pc. quad with a 4wt tip and a 5wt tip.....now after several more rods in the quiver, I am not so
sure......my favorite rods have become the Lew Parks 6611 that was my first cane stick.....and a Marty Karstetter 8'3" 4wt that is about as close in
cane as one can get to a Winston TMF........and I got an old W&M Stream & Lake 8642 that I have had for quite some time, and finally fished it the
other day...and it was great!.......so, I am completely confused and messed up about what to have Glenn and the Boys build......so I need some input from you
guys about what your thoughts are on the Sweetgrass rods, both on what you like and what you did not like maybe as much as you thought you might.....thanks
very much, steve

Here's my suggestions:
Quad 7'9" 3/2 4/5 wt. I will never sell this Quad or my Winston(Brackett) Quad 7'9" 2/2 4/5wt.
Penta 7'3" 2/2 4wt. Only heard glowing reports about this sweet rod. Hex 8'3" 3/2 5wt. Waggled this Monday in Twin Bridges just a sweet powerful med-fast action. Best, Dennis |

The Boo boys can build you anything and I will bet it will work great for you - so - 1) I recommend you write down all the places you fish (and what size fish
you most likely will catch) and what rods you will need, compare that to what you already have and then pick a rod to fill a need - or better yet - 2) since I
am beting this will be a really good rod for you, get one from Sweetgrass that will you think you will use the most irregardless of what you already have.

Dennis & Doug,
I think you are both right.......so I am thinking that a quad like Dennis' might just be the "do everything" rod for most everything I do......Dennis, just wondering if you could put up a few more photos of your quad.....is there anything you would do differently now, after using the rod for a while? Thanks for your help....steve |

Sweetgrass Quad | #4 | ||

I own a Winston similar to Dennis's quad - 7'9" 3/2 for 4-5 - it is a go to rod for me. I also have a couple of Talbot One Piece Quads. There is
something about a quad rod. The fly goes where you point the rod - it has a different feel than a six sided rod. I like the three piece model for
transportation....I like the one piece for the power they have.
Talk to Glenn or Jerry and tell them what species, where, water types and get there input into the rod. I am still on the waiting list for mine - a penta 5 wt of some type. Gregg |

Steve,
I wouldn't change anything with my Sweetgrass Quad. In the pics below you'll see two tubes(one a prototype) and two bags. My rod was the first out the door Sweetgrass in Jan 2008 and Sweetgrass just had a green prototype tube and brown bag when I picked up the rod from Glenn for my trip to NZ in Jan 2008. I was really lucky to personally pick out the wood reel seat that Mike from the shop made. Mike had about 10 different woods to choose from but this one really stood out. He chides me in jest to this day that this was the reel seat he wanted. I think there's no more wood like mine in the shop but check with Mike if you like it. The rod is medium+ action but I think Glenn may have quickened the action a bit since mine was made. The pentas have different wrap colors than the hex's and quads. On the whole IMHO the pentas 8' and under are a little faster(med-fast+) than the quads. I really like the pentas but I also love the casting plane of quads. Where you point the rod is where the fly goes to. As gmflyfish said talk to Jerry or Glenn about your needs. Good Luck!!! Dennis

I have fished a couple and I would say they have a little reserve power when you need it. They are much different than a quad or a six sided rod. I would
suggest you come out to Montana and take a couple of the Sweetgrass rods to the Beaverhead in Twin Bridges and cast them - then go fishing. yo ucan than make
an educated choice.

I am at the same stage as you are. I have cast a 7'9" Hex from Winston and chose to go down the quad road. 7'9" 4/5 wt 3/2. I would have loved going to Montana and try the differnet rods. I currently have a 7'6" 4 wt 2/2 Winston and wanted a little longer rod. I a not a big fan of 6wt rods and tend to love 4 wt roads, but I wanted something which would be better for a little more wind and a bigger river with bigger trout. I also use spey casts if there is no back room and the feedback was that the quad should be the better choice. I hope my Phoenix 5 wt will work with it well. I simply love how silk handles dry flies. I hope you get a great rod.

Glenn and Jerry are very accommodating and I do not see a problem with postponing your purchase to be sure you get the rod you want.. Of course you could go
for one of each - quad and a 5 side

After 7 year wait, I received a Bob Summers 275, 7'-6, 4 wt. For a 4 wt. ,it is as good as it gets. This year, after a 2 year wait I received my Sweetgrass
Hex 7'-6, 4 wt. At a fishing outting, 6 of us got out our bamboo rods out for a cast-off so as to compare rods. When I asked them witch rod they liked the
best, they all agreed it was the Sweetgrass rod. They said it cast as good as the Summers rod, but was lighter in the hand. That says a lot for the Sweetgrass
rod and I could not be happier. It is a perfect 4 wt. for our streams in Michigan.
When I when thru the process of type (Hex, Pinta, oor Quad) of bamboo rod to get, I picked the hex because the very large majority of all bamboo rods build are Hex type. I did not want to spend $2,000 for a rod and be in the minority, design wise. If the Pintas and the Quads had major advantages over a Hex, why isn't it the go-to design for the majorrity of the rod builders. That being said, I had cast a Winston Pinta 4 wt. and it was a wonderfull casting rod. I liked it a lot. But, me being a conservative sole, I put my $2,000 on a Sweetgrass Hex. That is me just being me. I too have my name coming up for another Sweetgrass rod and I'm not sure what I want. It is between a Sweetgrass 7'-9 4/5 wt. or a 7'-9 5wt. I am concerned that the 5 wt. may be too heavy in the hand. But it will be a Hex design. Your comments/help is appreciated. Isn't this stuff Fun! |

Charlie,
My Sweetgrass Quad 7'9" 3/2 4/5wt. is 3 5/8oz. If I was to make an educated guess a hex in the same length but a 2pc. will be less than 3 1/2oz. more likely around 3 1/8oz like my Brackett Winston Quad 7'9"2/2 Both of my rods feel light in hand. The 7'9" is a very versatile length. Check with Glenn or Jerry about your concern. Dennis |

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and comments.....if I don't change my mind by tomorrow morning, I will call the boys and have them build me a 7-9 as
close to Dennis' as possible.....if that is ok with you, Dennis?.......and as a side note, do you have any rod you like more that your quad Sweetgrass?
Also, generally what is the time frame between beginning production and completion? Again, I truly appreciate all the help on this from you guys...steve

Reels for the Sweet Quad? | #14 | ||
|
Dennis, one more question.....what reel(s) do you find complement the quad in both balance and appearance? Looks like you may have a San Miguel Two on it in
the photo....I have some of those, and some nice Evo's, and some really cool old Dingley's......thanks again, steve

Dennis, I also have one more question. What weight line do you normally us on your Sweetgrass 4/5. A 4 wt. or a 5 wt. line. Being that I have a 4 wt.
Sweetgrass, would you recommend a 4/5 wt or a 5 wt. I am only going to us it for dry fly fishing here in the midwest. I agree with you that the 4/5 wt. would
not feel heavy in the hand, but the 5 wt. might. Sweetgrass rods are sure nice looking rods and all are a dream to cast.

Charlie,
I have the Sweertgrass 7'9" 2/2 4/5wt. It is a great dry fly rod that is light enough in the hand to cast small olives along with the backbone to throw larger attractor dries and terrestrials. I would highly recommend this rod for the type of fishing you are describing. I also like fishing it with a 5wt. line, but it always doesn't hurt to experiment with different lines and weights to see what best suits your casting stlye. Good luck in your decision. Bob

Charlie & Steve,
I use a Sci Angler Trout WF5 on the Sweetgrass and the Winston which is loaded on my San Miquel 2. Although mine is rated a for 4/5 and leans more toward a 5 per Glenn. I also use a Cortland Syllk 4DT which is loaded on my Winston Perfect 2 7/8". I find both the San Miquel and Winston Perfect are great matches for the rod. Great for drys, beadhead nymphs and soft hackles. If I had to lean toward another Sweetgrass which I'm still on the list for it would be a penta 7'9" 3/2 5/6wt. Go for it guys. Check with Glenn and Jerry on build times. Enjoy!!! Dennis

In case you did not know, all Sweetgrass rod owners and those purchasing a Sweetgrass rod can get two rods when your name comes up. But if you get one rod now
and deside to get another at a future date, they will put your name directly into the build list when you order the second rod. It should take about 4 months
and not another two years.

i don't think you could go wrong on any of the rod picks , myself i have lucky ,seen and casted a few of the sweetgrass rods in the last couple years from guys bringing them when they come to canada for trip , if i was to pick one that really stands out , it would be the 7'9 quad , i'm a fan of winston rods as i have had a few myself , i think these sweetgrass rods are every bit as good if not better then the winston bamboo rods , i like quads , something about them , and they do seem to point and shoot better and be on target again this is just my IMHO so for me i'd take a 7'9 quad , have dennis wood reel seat , and i would beg them to flame it , you won't see that rod around , flamed rods just look better again that's my opinion , and don't worry about ever selling it , you never will , looking forward to testing your rod in end july on the bow / oldman , last you might want to make sure the reel seat will hold your red agate dingley

Rich,
One day while in the Sweetgrass shop I asked Glenn the question-Would you ever flame a Sweetgrass rod? Glenn's response was " No ". The cane color is honey amber which is really beautiful but I'm also a fan flame cane too. At one time Glenn either experimented at Winston or they left some cane in the oven too long and the end product turned out to be small batch of medium dark brown rods. My Winston quad 7'9 2/2 is one of those rods. The picture below shows both rods Sweetgrass 2nd from the top and bottom rod is the Winston. It's also darker than the flamed Quad Zimney top rod and the Kusse Quad 3rd rod down. Quite a difference from the traditionally light colored Winston's and Sweetgrass. The Winston I purchased the day I heard Glenn was leaving Winston. Dennis
