For really cold days I still use the Patagonia fingerless fleece gloves I bought many years ago. They are light, warm and stay warm even when wet (just squeeze
the excess water).
For very cool days I also like the Filson merino wool fingerless gloves (http://www.filson.com/pro...8248&parentPage=family). Also very light and warm. The light structure also makes them very breathable. In very cold conditions, cold wind does goes through the wool structure making them less warm. I'll use my fleece Patagonia gloves then. I don't like neoprene gloves because they are bulky and completely isolate your feel of the rod and line when fishing. |

I just can't seem to get used to gloves and end up taking them off and putting them in the pockets....along with my hands. Yep, I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree. Brook Trout are God's way of reminding us everything is going to be all right. |

I've got some Simms fingerless fleece gloves, as well as an Orvis pair with the flip top to convert them to mittens. Both are nice, but I prefer the Simms
because I just don't use the mitten feature and the fly line hangs up on the mitten part when they are folded back "out of the way".

These wonderful gloves had a mitten top that folds down to expose your fingers. It has a thumb guard for the thumb it too movers out of the way and it has a
rubberize palm. I have them and have given many pairs away to fellow fishermen when they see how comfortable I am. I would also recommend getting some heat
pack for the palm. Nothing like a toasting hand to make fishing enjoyable. I fish every month of the year in Montana so I do need to keep the extremities warm

I use the filson merino wool ones too. Soft and not itchy. Next pair will be fleece the wool can catch a fly if you fail to get the barb pinched all the way
down like you should. A minor enough issue that I'll use them till I lose them or wear them out but I wouldn't buy them again.

I usually don't fish in really cold weather, but I can imagine adding latex gloves under the fingerless ones, to keep my fingers dry.

A question please about the 1/2 finger gloves. I have only fished in very cold temps a couple of times.

I use a pair of fingerless wool gloves. Tried quite a few different modern brands. Keep going back to wool. warm even when wet, I carry 2 pairs.
Often I have been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar scarred, sunburned,
mosquito bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand have I been in a place that was less than beautiful.

I'm with you there on the wool. I've just had a pair of fingerless knitted in Fairisle. Lovely.

What I want to know is how to keep snow from building up on the bottom of felt soles... i fish allot in the winter and always snow , them big balls from snow make it just #$@%$# , i till this day have yet to figure a way to stop it , best i do is kinda kick and drag foot at same time and it will fling off , the little left on will melt fast in the water , but as you know , watch out when you come out of the water to warm up on the bank , she's slippy fingerless gloves , i use simms , have tried a bunch over the years , now wool is good , when i was over steelhead fishing after freezing my fingers , tried the new rubber ones and thems the best so far , your hand warm and it don't matter about getting them wet with water , with the others your always getting water on them when fishing , i think they ok but nothing like the new rubber one's ,

Fingerless, To cold | #17 | ||

Lefty Krey, In one of his 101 tips for Fly fishing, talks about using Ragg Wool gloves. You cut a slit in the thumb and first finger. You can slip your bare fingers through and then pull them back.I agree with Lefty, the exposed fingers are always cold. I found wool Ragg glove at REI in the close out bin, on FleaBay. They stay warm when wet, as well. |
