Your best 4 weight 8' 3/2 rod ? |
Lead | ||
|
Hello to all...I'm planning an 8' rod for a #4 line. Which would be your choice ? Payne 200... ? Leonard...? Are the "true varnish-free"
tapers available and public ?
So many thanks & all the best ! Giles |

For me it is between a Guba/Bacon Payne 102L( 4/5) or a Dave Male based on the Heddon 1 1/2F (3/4). Both are very smooth , delicate rods that are very nice
with DT4 lines. Oops, the 102 is a 2pc. , I responded without the question fully registering. The 102L is a nice taper but in a 3/2 I would go with the Heddon
. There may be a nice FET or Leonard taper that would be the ticket also. This is much more interesting than the best 8' 5wt., surprised there are not more
suggestions.

I think the Heddon with the small ferrule is a nice choice. Payne 200 is OK, but I think I prefer the Heddon.

I've only owned one for a short time, but the Heddon 1.5 f is very nice. |

I have the Dickerson 8012 Hollow Built by Lew Parks. Its a simple sweet rod and as soon as my wife stepped into the Kern River with it and landed a fish. . .
She claimed that rod as hers ! ! ! I have a Payne 201 that Mike Brooks built and it is my favorite rod to fish. It will work with a 4 or 5 and on a really windy day I'll put a wf6 on it and fish in close just so I can use it. |

I have a Linnea 8'1" 3pce true DT 4wt that comes in at a whopping 3.2ozs.(WOW). It has a light and heavy tip but I really can't tell a difference
yet.
I also have an 8' 3pce Aroner that says it is a 4 but it is more of a 5. Not complaining that is just how it is for me though. |

The two that I've owned are a W&M Granger 8040 and an early (1930s) Leonard 50DF. Some like the 8040 better with a 5, but mine was good with a DT4. The
Leonard was rather difficult to find, but is a true 4 weight and my favorite in this configuration.

Here are three:
Jeff Wagner 8' 3/2 for 4/5wt. Based on FE Thomas taper (Ed Engle wrote about it in Spliting Cane). I've cast the 3pc and it's a true 4wt, but will handle a 5 out to 50 ft. Chris Carlin FET Special - again, based on a FE Thomas taper. It's rated a 4/5 wt., but Chris can adjust it for you as needed. He's excellent with tapers. DR Stone - he makes an 8' 4wt in a 3pc as well, that is also based on an FE Thomas taper. All three of these rods cast from 5 to 50 ft with no waves and very smooth. All three are excellent to makers to work with. |

The Heddon 1 1/2F 8' 3/2 is an excellent 4-weight. My W&M 8040s feel more like 5-weights to me, but I know others consider them 4-weights. For what it's worth, my 8' Phillipson Pacemaker feels like a 4-weight to me, not a 5-weight, as does my 8' Sedgwick. |

My Heddon (trade) 8ft 1 3/4F trows a fine DT4 line, but I also use it with a DT5. Very powerful rod, a joy to fish.

So many thanks for everybody's input !
It's going to be difficult to choose... Looks like several rods are likely to be on the list... But is there a taper library that offers the original tapers, as plotted on paper, by let's say Heddon, or Payne... or can you only refer to those that have taken from more or less varnished rods... or do a few thousandths of an inch matter all that much ? Or still, are final blank measurements, out of the form or mill, really exactly those on paper, anyway...? Cheers, Giles |

Yep, I use most of my Granger 8040's (both Goodwin and Wright & McGill) with a DT-4-F.
These are medium action, not fast by any means, rods. One caveat--if possible, try before you buy.

baetis;
The only tapers from the original makers taper book that I know of are Garrison's, the rest have been measured off of old rods. While this may or may not be the numbers used to make the rods, they are what the rods turned out to be. Mostly what you have in a published taper is an educated guess, if you're goining to make rods from those numbers than it's up to you to figure out if they are accurate enough for your purposes. There is a good taper library and a link to another one at www.hexrod.net, as well as program for designing your own tapers. john |
