Here is my latest, an 8-foot, 4-piece, 5-weight with a new variation on slim ferrules. Rolf Baginski has dubbed this particular ferrule
design the BANC (Baginski-Anderson-California) connection because he and I cooked it up while he was visiting us in California a few months ago. As with most
things in rod building, it has probably been thought of before!
The basic idea of the BANC connection is a short metal tube right at the join, between rod sections, with a longer carbon-fiber rod extending in both directions. The male side is glued in at the time of gluing up the blank. The metal tubes of this rod are titanium and hexagonal on the outside and are not tapered. Three and 4-piece rods with similar ferrules (with carbon-fiber swells instead of metal tubes) were thoroughly tested by my wife and myself for a full month's worth of fishing in Montana last August. The rod pictured here has only been tested with abundant casting. The light weight and flex of the ferrules removes much of the negative aspect of a 4-piece cane rod. Probably the greatest disadvantage I have yet noticed is the amount of time necessary to make the darned things. There are no swells in the blank into the ferrule areas. The apparent swell is due to single, double, and triple silk wrapping over the the extent of the carbon-fiber rods and titanium tubes. The rainbow on the reel-seat insert is scrimshawed as is the rod signature. The
rod and reel-seat insert are finished with Gorilla Glue.

Hi Tim
First just like to congratulate you on a very nice job. I think if you could get hold of some hex shaped solid carbon for the spigot joint it would solve a lot of problems. Like I said fantastic job but the ferrule looks over complex.
Thanks for showing keep up the good work.

Gary,
Shaping carbon fiber rods into a hex tube is about the same amount of work as making the titanium hex tubes. My remark about the time it takes to make the rod has more to do with making 4 sections and 3 ferrules. If I were a commercial builder, that would be a concern, but, as an amateur, I can have the fun of trying something like this without worrying about being paid for my time. Trying the metal tube came about because of discussing such slim ferrules with others who are also experimenting with them. My next rod will also have the titanium tubes, but who knows what will come after that! I must say, I am very happy (so far) with how the combination of titanium tube and carbon fiber rod works. I suppose making my own nickel-silver ferrules (which I do not do) would take about the same amount of time as making the titanium-carbon-fiber spigots and cutting the sockets in the blank for the spigots. Here is a 2 0z ready to fish 3wt based on the Leonard ACM taper. I shortened it to 6'3". It is a joy to cast. I wanted a very light rod that was only
a 3wt, not a 3,4,5 wt. This little rod is perfect for casting just the leader and maybe 10' of line. From 10' to 30' the rod was a joy, light and
accurate. With a double haul I made some 40' casts, but I do not expect to do that on the creek. I am guessing a 10" brook trout will put a very good
bend in this rod. I wound up making the hardware antique bronze, I like it. The second tip is still drying.

upper section of the james river, using a restored windchester6035 good rod. well all for now happy holidays to you and yours hope to see you in feb. regards

MJF, What a fine looking little rod you've made here! I'm also liking the smaller, light rods especially for the smallish trout I'm used to. I fish mostly 4 wts, sometimes a 3wt. Still, I'd love to create one like you have here sometime in the future. A fine little, delicate rod for ....those times when you're in a good spot, out of the breeze during a hatch and can play some! Nice work! Jeremy. |

This is a lesser effort, but seems to be functional. It is an 8-0 #5 of semi-parabolic taper with a light and heavy tip. The different banding on the ferrule wraps was on purpose so I could tell the tips apart at a glance. This is the first rod out of the new oven and it was a bit over cooked. It will hold 50 feet of WF-8 line in the air, so I don't think its strength was too compromised. The swell into the socket is 5 inches and the walls are based on thicknesses presented by Alberto in '07. The blank was only .05 ounces heavier than if it would have been made of one piece. Once I figure out how to make the perfect rod, I'll tackle taking decent pictures!
