I'll be fishing the special regulations stretch.
Anyone out there fished it recently?
Would be most appreciative of any help you might offer as to fly patterns and tactics.
You may pm me or post here if you prefer.
Thanks in advance!
Bob

I am hopeful of getting away for a day of fishing the Smith River this coming week.

I've stayed away from the Smith for several years, having heard that it developed a problem with didymo. Now, I hear that the problem is gone. If you go
to the Smith, please report what you find and about your success. I'd be interested in going back.

Ken Townsend wrote: Ken, I've fished the river several times in the last few years. Just never in early winter. I can't recall any evidence of didymo. Is didymo detrimental to the fish population? I know I fish a great tailwater river in Tennessee and it has abundant didymo but is still loaded with a very large and good population of browns. Bob |

I was able to get up to the Smith yesterday for about four hours of fishing. A balmy 40 degrees at about noon!
It was great action on size 20 BWO soft hackles. Such good action that I hardly noticed the cold. Was dressed well for the occasion. I got on the water about 12:30 and it was obvious they had released water that morning (the Corps got me with their "subject to change"!!). I still was able to wade, very carefully, my favorite stretch and the level improved steadily. Here are a few pictures. As you can probably tell, the water level is elevated. I just thought this was a cool pic of the RR tracks that parallel the section I was fishing....
One obligatory fish pic. My hands never touched him!!
My fishing companions, Bill Stanley and K. Hardy.
A great day!! BobbyG |

I love the train tracks photo. Nice job on the Smith as it is no easy river.

Excellent. I'm glad you had a passable day; the Smith has rarely been kind to me.

for the kind words!
You are most definitely correct. It is a tough nut, not easy, and can be totally unkind! I've left there more than once with my tail between my legs! Yesterday was most memorable and sure made the ride home a lot easier!! Bob
p.s. I like the RR track pic too Dave. I think it would be even better in black and white?

Thanks for the photos. Many nights of my misspent youth were spent camped out on the right side of those tracks. Two summers ago, I went back for the first
time in many years, on a 100 degree day. Skunked. After the generation began, I went to find air conditioning. Later, as the water fell, just before dusk, the
river came alive with fish, but the mist made it impossible to see rises. I Fished until dark, casting to the sound. I caught a dozen fish. Funny river.
