Help needed on "new" acquisition |
Lead | ||
|
I just aquired a rod, I guess it's not in my hot little hands yet, but I was wondering if anyone might know who used double intermediates? I'm
thinking Montague (Rex where are you, I need your expertise!). The reel seat could be a high end Monty, an F.E. Thomas or even an Edwards. More than likely
an early Montague, because of both the winding check and that the sliding band is very similar to my A&F Yellowstone Special. Thanks for any help you
might be able to give!

Have you seen double intermediates like this before? If so, do you recall which model?
Thanks

Here are a few pictures I took today after getting the rod.

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me! All the hardware is brass, pinned ferrules and the stripper guide will need to be replaced with an agate instead of the wire guide added at a later date with heavy thread. 4 1/2" above the grip, the rod also had a wrap added of the same heavy thread in one large clump. I removed it, and it looks like it served no purpose. The heavy old varnish will be a challenge to remove with denatured alcohol. I will give it a try, but I may elect to just remove all the varnish and wraps and start fresh with new silks! And I love intermediates! They are so time consuming, and this baby has lots, 78 just on the butt! Each section is 39" except for short tip, in at 36". So it is a 9 3/4' rod. I started polishing the brass, and it is in very good shape, all the ferrules are tight and fit very well. The wooden holder is fractured, and looks almost like a bent arm at the elbow. That won't be too much of a problem, I am pretty sure that can be repaired and then replace the old covering with new blue velvet. I get a rod like this shipped to me at work, and my employees laugh because I walk around singing Merry Christmas to me! Well at least I'm taken care of for Christmas now!

Nice - don't underestimate the power of patience & denatured alcohol with melt down varnish. Often, with care, every intermediate can be saved... that
is fun with an old rod..
Yes, have seen double & triple inermediate patterns with early Montys - higher end ones ... |

Jack,
It would be great if you could post some photos when you have finished the rod. Bob |

Jack,
I dug deep into my pile of Monty ads, and I found an advertisement matching your rod by about 95%. The ad is illustrated, and describes a rod with "bronzed mountings, welted ferrules, wound in red silk, put up in a velvet covered form and canvas bag". The windings are nearly identical at the signature, and intermediates are in a series of 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3, 2, 2 wraps all along the rod. I believe this ad is from some time between 1905 and 1915. I'd sure like to see some pics when you get it cleaned up! . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

JH,
I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but I have the same rod in about the same shape except the brasswork has a bit of corrossion and most of the wraps are gone. I was going through the posts seeing if I could identify it and what do you know? Success! Before I go about rebuilding it I wanted to ask is this a rod that would be better off with someone who specializes in these things or is it safe for a bamboo rod novice (I've redone a few Japanese post war rods) to take on. Thanks, NevadaK |

NevadaK,
I haven't decided what route I'm taking on this one yet. It's too nice a rod to make any mistakes on. I want to restore it with the original wraps, but the old varnish is almost like marble and it doesn't dissolve very well with alcohol. I'm wondering if I drench the rod over and over again, will the alcohol also dissolve the animal hide glue used to glue up the blanks? I can buy the correct silks if I should decide to scrape off the old varnish and re wrap the rod, but I get bored after too long and it would take too long to the tenth degree to wrap this baby (78 intermediates just on the butt!)!! What to do, what to do... Jack

Jack,
I just noticed that you have a short tip. Since bamboo isn't my cup of tea, I would be happy to send the rod I have to you. I picked it up as part of an ebay odd lot and it has one short and one full length tip as well. The varnish on the one I have may be easier to remove as well. Send me your address if interested. K |

NevadaK,
That's a great offer! I will take you up on it, and if/when I sell it after restoration I will give you a commission on the selling price. A rod like this could bring good money restored, I want to get into doing this to supplement my retirement in a few years, and you would be my first "partner". I will send you my address through a PM. Jack
