Definitely a higher grade Montague reel seat. I have seen this reel seat on the Trail and Fishkill models. I have this reel seat on an early Fishkill in my
collection.

Possibly early Redwing. Is there a decal or oval ghosting on it? My early Manitous and Redwings had an oval decal that just said Montague, no model name.

Manitou Tournament???... | #3 | ||
|
Steve,
Manitous and the Tobique are the only models (that I'm aware of) that sport these signature wraps. As far as I know, the Tobique was only made as a salmon rod. The reel seat and sliding band on your rod are typical of high-end Monty models from the early 1930's. Your rod appears to be a Manitou Tournament model. These are pretty rare, and I've only seen a couple of them. Most of the Manitou Tournaments I've seen had only 4 snakes on the tip sections, as compared to 5 or 6 snakes on most regular Manitous. I have a Mantiou Tournament (pictured below) that seems to be wrapped in pongee, tipped with red (it may be faded purple), with what appears to be red signature wraps, just like yours. It has a reel seat similar to yours, with a little less metal. The Tournament model was usually built with thinned hardware, and often without a winding check to make it lighter. ![]()
How many snake guides are on your tip sections? . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

Rex is probably correct on the ID, but I do know that Edwards made sliding rings similar to this, called "butterfly" sliding bands.
