I need to paint the winding plate on my perfect that was welded and was wondering if any of you had suggestions on a closely matching paint.
Thanks Russell |

The problem with painting these reels is -- aluminum. Aluminum doesn't take paint worth a darn unless the metal is preped ( etched) and primed properly. I
recommend contacting an aircraft mechanic. These guys have to know all the tricks for painting aluminum and may be all set to do the prep and priming for you.

Thanks for the reply's. I don't know how I missed that thread. The reel went to Bill A's and is already primed or has paint left. I am mainly
looking for a good product that matches well, but I might give it a different color all together (nothing to outrageous but I always did like those Greatfull
Dead Steal Your Face Abels).

While not an expert in painting reels, having done just one myself, I found that even if the aluminium was correctly primed (a la hardware store primer...) the
top coat (if sprayed auto type) would dry, harden then in a brittle kind of way and chip easily. I have in the basement a boxful of parts of a Hardy Exalta
(including some new old stock parts that I have unearthed) that I want to restore to be a working version of the unused one that I have. I think that I will
try stove
enamel paint which can be heated to harden it, comes in a useful array of greys as well.

do some poking about on the Internet about taxidermy paint and also painting aluminum siding. Might be something there for you

There is a company I used to work for in Grand Rapids, MI and the owner is a pro at painting on aluminum. It is all about prep work and using the correct
primer, the paint itself is the easy part.
The company's name is Boss Electrostatic Inc., I believe the number is 616-575-0577 Hope this will help. Borderfly |

I use Brownell's AlumnaHyde II paint on aluminum and steel for the matter. It is an epoxy paint and is hard as nails when cure. I don't know if they
have the color you want but they have several different colors.

Thanks for the recomendations. I have not had a chance to do much looking for this project yet. I looked at the auto parts store but just found rattle cans
that did not seem like it would work all that well. I'll try and post a few pics of after fix and before paint and then when painted. Here is a before
fix pic.

Here is the reel with the handle replaced and moved out of the previously broken portion of the winding plate, weld ground down, and primed. It will be ready
to fish when the winding plate is painted, or sooner if I do not get to it pretty quick.

My immediate first thought was a (brass or chrome) counterweight.
Historically more correct than a second handle. Very nice work, that reel has many years of fishing left in it!

The thing I do not like about the idea of another handle is that I do not totally trust the weld and that is why I had the handle moved. I would hate to have
the weld break while playing a fish. I have thought about adding the counterweight but do not know where to get one of the hardy counterweights.

A counterweight seems like the right solution. I'm not so sure hardy counterweight is something your going to be able to find easily. If there out there
posting on the classified for one may work.

Why not just filler weld the old handle hole now before going any further?
Its had plenty of weld in the same area. Then keeps the reel looking as it was. |
