I just got this from my favorite Scots vendors, Eilean and Rodney and I find it very charming and .... thought provoking! It's a Hardy "GEM" and the reason I'm reviving this thread is that the Burgesses, Eilean and Rodney are offering at the moment both a Hardy Gem and a Hardy "The Conquest" Trotting reel. If you take a look at them (Mactackle) you may see a lot of similar elements in the two, very different reels.
The two aspects that say "Hardy" to me are: the handle and the spool release cover...(oh, yes...the stamping). Otherwise, it looks as if it were a Martin. No, not Alex Martin, I mean the American one. I'm guessing it's from the 60s and wonder if Hardy wanted to capture some of the Medalist market.
Some very neat points about this reel: it functions in Left or Right hand, and has a nickel-silver bar for each direction only on the side where the line would be stripped. The check purrs when winding in and makes a pleasant sound going out and best of all...at the lightest setting it could probably protect 8x tippet. I like it!

I think Hardy was going after the Medalist nitch in market and they are a nice running reel with good lite check setting. Well made working man priced reel and
I think under appreciated for the value. Good find . Daryl
'Ideal reel for the new-comer to the sport, the young angler and the angler who wishes to fish on a budget. The construction is sturdy and light, of modern
design and handsome appearance.' I think that Hardy's soon realised that anglers did not go to them for cheap and cheerful reels and the reel was soon
dropped . I had one once and (sorry) was pleased to get rid of the thing.
Not much I'd say, very a-typical for Hardy and I think oddsnrods hits the nail on the head.
No doubt a nice reel in itself, but different strokes for different folks. It just doesn't rattle my check.
The price then was £2 8s 6d, plus purchase tax whereas a Flyweight was£4 17s 0d, a Princess £5 17s 0d. The smallest St George was £5 4s 0d and the smallest
Perfect £5 17s 6d.
I have always thought that the Gem reels were made for Hardy, but I don't know who made them.

Jewel was copied by Mitre-Hardy, totally different company which rode on Hardy Bros' coat tails for a while.
Mitre-Hardy was a joint venture between Mitre a long established sports company famous for its footballs and Hardy. All the tackle was made by or sourced by
Hardy and sold through the Mitre distribution network. All the cane rods were made in Alnwick but were second rate. The short rods are very collectible and
scarce.
Thanks for a great discussion. I agree with most everyone! Doc, I have the same feeling that it may have been made by someone else...it wouldn't be the
first time! Consider the cane rods built by Pezon et Michel for Sharpes and...Leonard. I am enjoying it especially since it is so un-Hardy like!

The joint venture ended because Hardy's were making no money on the project. It was conceived as a way of using up and getting rid of the second grade
cane, however they were soon ran out of second quality cane and had to use the first quality thus defeating the object of the original exercise.
