Posts: 31 01/03/2010 04:03	Tags : None Very new to Classic reels and need some help. In an out of the way Antique Shop have seen a nice conditioned reel with the following features/ markings. Would love to get some history/opinions on the reel and its approx vintage. 3 3/8" or 3 1/2" dia, medium width. Looks very much like a Condex. Appears to have never had any finish applied, is an aluminium finish. Solid spool with a brass retaining screw which seems to be recessed into the spool, no washer viewable. Markings on frame side, C Farlow and Co Ltd, London SW1. Also Holdfast, and a carried curved fish symbol. Basic single check with no adjustment. Ivorine coloured handle, cracked/crazed condition. Brass retaining screw. Brass reelfoot. 2 brass screws. Reel appears to have not been used, spool is tight as a drum. Wasn't sure about the "no finish" appearance, but cannot see any signs of it being removed or any wear. Also symbols on the reel are totally clean and unmarked. Only fault being what appears to be oxidation at base of spool. Asking price is USD 120 Is this excessive, about right, a bargain? All opinions welcome, cheers. Posts: 7711 01/03/2010 10:38 Bulldog1935	a Panton? or perhaps a Grenaby? these reels were most likely made by Sharpes of Aberdeen this is 1960; though, it sounds like you may have an earlier or even prewar reel with all the brass. Posts: 294 01/03/2010 12:19	With a brass foot, cracked ivorine handle, ~~and the Holdfast logos~~, it sounds like a pre-war version - probably made by J. W. Young & Sons. As bulldog says, let's see a photo. Regards, Doc Correction - The Holdfast logos were on the post-war Grenabys and Pantons - I was thinking of the later "Serpents", Doh. Posts: 766 01/03/2010 13:17	To answer the second part of the question, sight unseen, I'd pay $120. for such a reel w/ the Holdfast logo w/out batting an eye...but, then...I really like that sort of thing. I have older Young-made reels w/ logo and address but I also have a 60s (?) Farlight w/ the holdfast logo. Let's see a picture! Posts: 32 01/03/2010 16:33	Thanks gents, The reel is very similar in shape, but from memory has no boss on the spool around the retaining screw. Also has no model name on it. The handle makes me think older. I think I'll buy it today (if shop open) and post some pikkies. Thanks again, and cheers bulldog for the photos.

Posts: 34 01/06/2010 03:47	UPDATE. Had another look today. Looks same pattern as Condex. Reasonable amount of oxidising to spool base. No Boss on spool around retaining screw. No Model name. Opened it up. A lot of oxidising to inside surfaces. Looking very closely, couldnt rule out a paint finish being removed. Could see some file dressing marks to frame pillars that I'm sure wouldn't have been left like that if sold in this finish style. Pawl was a little worn, looked to be of a brass alloy. Screws of Handle and Reelfoot had a little too much burring for my liking. Had to leave it alone. If someone wants a photo sometime, I'll get a few next time I'm passing if allowed. A little out of the way. Thanks again for the help. Cheers.
