Ok as is obvious from my posts I am no photographer more of a snapshot taker..... I've been using a Sony Cybershot for a few years....it rides in a vest pocket in a baggie.... or in the interior pocket of my waders... hard use decent (and occasionally by luck exceptional) pics. I've been toying with this for some time and am truly ready to do it now. I'm tired of doing the baggie dance while not dropping the camera or hurting the fish... I want to get one of the waterproof ones. Keep it on a lanyard and just rest it in my shirt pocket to keep it from bouncing around.... It will also make it safer when some kind soul wanders over to see a good fish and offers to snap a pic for me.......if it goes in on the handoff no biggie.... What make/ model do most of you use?????? Suggestions for places with good pricing/ service?? Secondarily any suggestions sites or books to help me learn to make more shots come out with that magical quality that I stumble on now and then? No desire to be a photographer or like some of my friends that schlepp 38 pounds of photo gear on the stream I'd just like to capture some memories better for my journal..........

I have a Pentax WP-io (a few models ago). Actually rated waterproof, very handy size fits right into one of the small front pockets on a Simms Guide vest. Mine is 6Mpixels, they may be up to 10 now.
I've had it for over a year and love it... it fits my needs perfectly... sometimes the ultra slim/small cameras are hard to grasp so i wanted something alittle bigger.. it's not BIG but it has some meat to it and a nice heft... the Leica lens is nice and it has a powerful zoom... fairly fast picture taking and in burst mode it can take 2 frames per second (good to try to capture the perfect pic when fighting a fish, etc...)
it's not waterproof so you do have to be careful w/ it... really, its our "family" camera... i do still have my old Pentax Optio WP 5MP from 5 years ago that works fine and goes along if there a possibility of getting soaked... I think the Lumix takes much nicer pics but each have their place. The Lumix has some nice features and you can really play around w/ settings easily... i had a pretty nice mid-size digital camera (a step below SLR) for awhile when i thought i wanted to get into photography a bit more but never used it... the Lumix is the perfect in-between camera for me...
plus it has a pretty good macro for close ups of rods, fish, flies, etc...
I have also been looking for a new camera. I have noticed that if I don't bring a camera with me when I am fishing, I seem to catch a pretty good amount of large fish. When I am packing the camera, I usually don't catch anything. Oh well, that's usually the way things work out for me.
My question is: Are waterproof camera's really waterproof? Do they work as well as regular camera's? Are they worth the extra money? How many regular camera's do I need to drop into the river to make it worth while?
i know my Option WP is def. waterproof... i've dropped it a few times while landing fish, etc... and other cameras would probably be toast.. i think if you're looking for a strictly "Fishing" camera then it's a great buy... there are a few things i'm not crazy about though... first, there's usually a lesser zoom b/c of no exterior lens adjustment (the lens is always in the camera and never extends out like other digitals) and there's a protective glass over the lens that, should it ever get scratched, is non-replacable. There's also no protective cover for this glass so its always exposed... i keep my camera in a Timbuk2 cell phone holder and it has done a fantastic job of keeping it protected... put it this way... i'm VERY tough on gear and basically everythng I own... my old Optio WP still works like a champ and it's gone everywhere...
here's a pic from my honeymoon in Hawaii while snorkeling... probably down 10-12 feet at this point but i took it down to 20ish... it stayed in my pocket and continuously submerged for long periods of time... no issues.
Marty, I have a 5 year old Pentax Optio that I am pleased with. Easy to use, fully automatic, program able, zoom, high quality macro, not a battery hog, sturdy, and water proof. Not just splash proof, water proof. Fits in my shirt pocket. The newer models have screens that are brighter in strong sunlight. A great value. Good luck. Bill Lambot
I have the Pentax Optio and love it too. It
has not let me down yet. I just have to make it easier on myself and
figure out all of the options that comes with it.
AAron:
Waterproof means different things, based on how it's tested. Typically there is a "JIS class" label for a given camera, this denotes how well the camera is sealed. The Pentax "W"'s (I have a WPi and a W10) that are both JIS class 8, rated for 1.5meters for 30 minutes, newer models are often better: W80 is submersible to 5meters, shockproof to 1 meter (meaning you can drop it from your waist without worrying too much about it). The ones I have are more than adequate for most daily use, decent macro (see my avatar), nice and convenient size. The only downside is the lack of viewfinder, but only because if the sun is behind you the LCD gets hard to see so you have to shade it.
Just my opinions, as stated previously if one disagrees or thinks I'm FOS, then just ignore anything I have to say...
I'll second the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 as a great point & shoot fishing camera. I bought one last month after researching the alternatives--it's highly regarded. It's waterproof, shockproof to five feet and has a decent Leica lens. MSRP is on the high side for compact digital, but it seems to be readly available from on-line dealers for 75% of list.
These are from its initial outing--I'm still learning how to use it:
The downside of point& shoot cameras for me is getting good focus in landscape shots. I take a lot of not-quite-right photos like this:
However, IMO, carrying an SLR on the stream is impractical and too much of a risk.
I still carry my Pentax Zoom90-WR a 35mm point and shoot waterproof camera. It is bomb proof. I've looked at the small waterproof digitals and quite frankly, they don't look like they'll survive a lot bashing about and drops on to rocks. My trusty Pentax has survived more than 15 years of bashing and is still going strong.
No it's not a digital and I can't just start firing off the shutter button like I do with my digital camera but it DOES take really fine quality photographs. The drugstore digitizes the photos for processing and for me? I'd rather pay for the processing than drop a new $300 digital camera onto the rocks one time and have it become a paper-weight....which I did to my son's little Nikon digital one day.
You can still pick these little jewels up on 'bay pretty cheap and they were made in Japan, not China...and ooze quality.
