Trout at the tip of Africa |

I spent Monday this week fishing with a good friend of mine just outside Cape Town, in South Africa. Tom Sutcliffe is a retired medical doctor and is an icon
of South African trout fishing. Tom has authored seven books on trout fishing in South Africa, is an acclaimed water colour artist and a highly respected
photgrapher. I did the fishing while the good doctor took pictures. The flows in the high altritude mountain streams are low at this time of year, but I
managed to catch some stunning little rainbows on dry flies. I used a 7'6" 4-wt Payne 198, made by Chris McDowell (and aquired from Cloozoe). The
rainbows were stocked just once in this stream - in 1905. They are the real deal for sure and are just gorgeous. On average, the fish run 8 - 12", but
every now and then a bus of 15" will get you all weak-kneed and dry in the mouth! These are the pics from the day that Tom sent me. Hope you enjoy.

Some really nice photos. I especially like the second from last that shows how different the worlds above and below the waterline are.

Gorgeous pictures! Thanks for sharing them with us.
FFP "He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly
fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman."

Great pictures, beautiful scenery!
About South Africa: How safe is it for tourists to fish in such remote areas? (Sorry for asking, but this question just keeps me busy when I think about South Africa as a ff destination) Jay |

The streams we fish are in very remote parts of the country. Not the kind of places where people just "hang out". In fact it is very rarely that one sees anyone else during a days fishing. We make a point of parking the car in a visible, open place. As in most countries, the crime generally tends to occur within the big cities. Tom |

Hi Jay
Tom's comments are spot on, we do live in a country with a crime problem, but it is mainly contained to the urban areas. The remote streams and rivers tend to be free from crime and I have not heard of any bad experiences out on the streams.
Mike I really should be fishing... |

Our best stream fishing happens from March to May and then late August through to late October. These are the months that straddle our winter. Of course, a lot depends on rainfall and how good the snow fall was. We do also have some tailwater fisheries that fish right through the year. Flows also vary from stream to stream around the country. T |

Tom, Thanks for posting the photos. It's very inspiring to see the rod fished in such a unique and beautiful setting so far away from Oregon. The photos are amazing. Chris McDowell |

Hi Chris
And after discussing my introduction into grass with Tom and after casting a couple of his sticks on the lawn,
I firmly believe I need one, this one, the Paynne 198...
I really should be fishing... |
