I just received a new rod. I believe it is a Montague based on ferrules and red agate inserts in the stripping guide and tip top. I would like a
confirmation from someone who knows more than me (pretty much everyone on this forum !!) Also, what vintage ? I'm guessing 1920's based on the small
grip and intermediate wraps. Any input is appreciated !!

Monty doesn't quite ring true, given the grip shape and what I can see of the female ferrules - but the pictures, while of good quality, are too small to see the details. Are you using Photobucket? If so, transfer a FULL SIZE image you want to post to Photobucket, and just left click on the IMG CODE line under that image - this will automatically copy the right code. Then right click at an appropriate spot in a new post and hit PASTE. Don't use any of the "convenient" image icons in the YUKU toolbar - there's no need. Yuku and Photobucket will size the image correctly for you. Oh, and if you're not using Photobucket, try it - it's free. Good luck!
The more I think I know, the less I know I know.

Thanks, I'll try adding the bigger pictures when I get a chance. I thought the ferrules looked very much like ferrules on other rods that have been
ID'd on this forum as Montague, although I'm far from an expert. Hopefully the bigger pictures will help.

Here are some full size pictures. The rod is 8'-6" long, 3 piece, all 3 pieces are the same length. It only came with one tip. The reel seat appears to be N/S, and has a sliding band. There are no manufacturer's ID markings anywhere. I'd like to try and confirm who it was manufactured by, and what era (1920's, 1930's). Any help is appreciated. And thanks, Housatonic Quill for the tips in getting the bigger pics posted. |

The ferrules with their very large and wide welt are most likely Bartlett ferrules. circa 1900-1925 and that is one of those seats that we see on rods by many
makers and was most likely a product of the Bartlett/Montague/Chubb firm (which where all under the same ownership at that time) of the 1900-1925 period . It
is the same seat seen on many different trade rods.
including rods from Dame Stoddard and even those darn "The Walton"s etc. Jeff |

Montague Rod... | #6 | ||
|
North Country Brookie,
The hardware and the cork shape of this rod appear identical to some 1920's Montague Redwings that I own. Check out my post relating to the Conway Special and Redwing comparison at http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/14912?page=2 . Additionally, the swelled butt of the cane, and the multiple red intermediates track with the Redwing as well. The only difference I can find is the signature windings, which may indicate that it's a trade rod or they may have been added to the rod on top of the original Redwing windings, or re-wrapped all together. One attribute that is missing from the pictures that could help is the number of guides on the tip sections. A Redwing usually has 5 snake guides on the tip sections of an 8'6" rod (not including the tip-tops). If it has 5 snake guides on the tip section, it is most likely a Redwing or a Redwing-level trade rod built for one of the many distributors and retailers that Montague sold to, including Pflueger, L.L. Bean, Winchester, Tryon, etc. Some of the most beautifully-wrapped Redwing-level trade rods I've seen were special ordered and re-sold by Winchester and Pflueger. So, how many snake guides are on the tip sections? . . . Rex GoneFlyFishin |

Rex,
I'm not sure how many guides are on the tip sections, I'll have to check, and let you know.
Thanks.

Rex,
My rod has 4 snake guides on the tip section, and had 3 (1 is currently missing) on the mid section. The winding check is like the one on your Redwing in the center picture, except mine does not have the fine lines. The "knurling" on the winding check is identical, and in exactly the same place on the check as your Redwing. Not sure if this helps clear things up, or muddies the waters further. Also, the intermediate wraps are gold, not red. The snake guide wraps, ferrule wraps, and signature wraps at the butt are red, but the intermediates are gold. |
