Took Mario's rod out for its maiden voyage today. 6'8", 2/2, DT2 hex.
Has good karma too.....caught 30 brookies today with this. What a hoot on a 2 weight line.

Your rod made by Timmy is so elegant, I get the impression of a rod from the 1920's. Really well done.
Mario's little rod sound like a winner on the water. Looks great as well. |

In the last couple of months I have got two from Shane Grey (greywolf) ordered a dreamcatcher from Dietrich bros and on the waiting list for a gem from Bruce
Herndon. They are all between 4 and 6wt and hopefully all will suit our Australian conditions.

I predict you'll love Wyatt's Dreamcatcher. He made me a 6'8" 2/2 2wt, on which I caught a 24" rainbow on a #26 brassie, 6X. To hand in under five minutes and swam away strongly. Rod still dead straight after brute above and lots more fish. Cosmetics perfect, as is ferrule fit. Wyatt a great guy to deal with, also. |

Thanks for the kind words. The rod is sweet. I used a size 12 dry fly all day and the rod could cast that easily 30-40 feet with crisp action. Despite being a 2 weight rod, never struggled with the fish at all....makes me yearn for a 1 weight rod now, HA!. ps John Bradford told me he was starting my rod next month.....I sure could use some of your recommendations so I know what to ask him to make. A few years ago I posted a question on the Forum about "saving" bamboo fly rods which have seen better days. I, for one, very much enjoy finding such
old rods and bringing them back to life, so to speak.
My latest is a lowly, but quite scarce, 7 1/2-foot Heddon Model 8, 1 1/2F. This little rod had definitely been "put away wet" many years ago resulting in the partial de-lamination of all four sections. Several wraps had, in fact, literally rotted away leaving black water or rust marks where the guides had been. Who would buy such a "basket case", much less want to restore it? Well...uh, I guess...me! You see I have a special place in my heart for the basic Model 8 Heddons. It was, in fact, the restoration of my late Dad's 8 1/2-foot, Model 8, 2F by Doug Merrick at the Winston shop in San Francisco circa 1972 that really got me started in "this fine madness". In any case, this particular Model 8, which was produced for only a year or two in the early 1950's, had obviously been used very little. All sections were full length, straight and the nickel silver ferrules, reel seat and grip were in good shape. Even the original Heddon inked markings were still there as was the original Heddon bag. That said, while I have successfully repaired minor de-laminations before, these were a little more extensive than I felt I could handle. So I decided to farm out the restoration to Dennis Stone (tapermaker), who I knew had experience in fully de-laminating and then re-gluing whole rod sections. Dennis pulled the bright ferrules and then did just that with the 3/2 Model 8. He was able to save the Heddon markings and even matched the unusual, but original, gold & brown "striped" wraps. As a result, the little rod is once again as fishable as the day it left the Heddon shop, and it casts great. Thanks, Dennis! I've heard some say they won't own a restored rod. Well, that's fine. But as for me, I'll take great pleasure in returning rods, like this humble little Heddon, to the streams they were made to fish. Best, Flyman

I agree we should be bringing some of the old rods back to life. You and Dennis have done a great job on a very scarce rod. Rods from the early 50's still have a lot of fishing left in them and there great rods to use. I'm having a Heddon #13 Lucky Angler 2 pc. featherweight restored and will post it when It gets back. She is a 7'6" 3/2 4wt Signature Rod by Chris McDowell of Eugene, Ore. It is one of the prettiest things I've ever seen, and these photos
do not do her justice! The varnish work is stunning, the flaming gorgeous and the wraps executed with the beauty, elegance and grace of a
Nastia Liukin balance beam routine.
I have a hand injury which will keep me from casting her for a bit, but I will certainly let you know how the taper performs when I finally get the chance. Enjoy!

BTW, the reel seat insert is a very nice piece of spalted maple, and the ferrule plugs are fashioned from walnut.

Speaking of older rods, I bought this one from Dave Male (oneculm). It's a very nice one-tip 1 1/2F Heddon 14. It casts great with a TT5.
