jaaliam Welcome to the board
Sounds like a nice combo with the silk line . . . . Is this your first cane rod ? Where do you fish most often. Alan |

Top 3 rods used ? | #63 | ||
|
Well, before last Thursday anyway, the top three rods I use most will be for small stream use only. I use my favorite of all time, a PHY made Driggs blank,
finished out by the "Fly Factory" in the UP some time in the 70's, next would be a nice little FE Thomas 6'-8" 3wt that is great for
those small brookies in mid summer low water situations, and then there's a PHY MM 5wt that a friend made for me, that's a great rod for early season
and hex hatches, as well as a great all around rod. Also have to slip in a 4th rod, a PHY Perfectionist blank from T. Zietak that a friend finished for me, a
nice smooth full parabolic 4wt.
Now, after last Thursday, I don't think I would use anything under a 5wt on our little "Wood River" here in Rhode Island, because last Thursday we (TU Chapter#225) did a float stock that the DEM had scheduled for us, 400 fish, and when the truck showed up I thought I was seeing things. The guys in the truck started scooping out these monster bows, these were all in the 18-24" range, and 3-5lbs, they looked like salmon from up north. They were so big, we had to go down stream and drag the boxes back up to the truck for a re-fill, we couldn't fit them all in the boxes. I know most of you are saying, what's the big deal, well, I'm used to hunting 6-9" brookies and big 14-16" bows and some slightly bigger brown's in our little stream, nothing this big. I just hope some of them make it as hold overs til next season, I had seen 2 on the bank by the middle of the afternoon that a very happy Osprey had gotten hold of, and I'm sure many others will be showing up for a snack as the days get shorter. If there is a nice population of native fish in that little creek we can only hope those big stockers get taken out by birds or fisherman.

don't get mad, but my Cummings Water Witch glass is the rod I desire to fish more than any other rod.
OK, sticking to cane - Heddon 1-3/4f in both 8' and 8-1/2' |

As of now, it is a Lamiglas Honey 7.5' 4wt glass, but I do not currently have a cane rod, I am looking for a nice light bass rod an 8.5' 5/6 would be
nice....

I agree with Orange Caddis about the Dave Kenney rods. My favorites are his F1 (7 1/2' 4wt) and H1 (8' 5wt). These are the only 2 I own but I have
cast many others and fished with some others as well, and every one of them is a masterpiece. Although I have some other makes (a couple of Grangers
especially) that I'm profoundly fond of, the F1 and H1 are the ones I usually reach for. They're beautiful, both powerful and sweetly delicate, and
just plain cast where I look. And they make my sweet Grangers, no matter how much I like them anyway, feel downright funky.

It is interesting to look back a couple years and see the "trend" I have followed. It seems as though I always gravitate towards longer rods. I tend
to fish one rod about 90-95% of the time each season. Four years ago I used a 8'6" 7 wt. Howells. Three years ago I used a Goodwin Victory 9053 6 1/4
oz. 7 wt. , I screwed up my entire thumb including the tendons up into my wrist casting this rod all season (big, fast water, lots of casts). It took the
entire off-season for my hand feel better. Because of the hand, last season I toned down the rod length and fished a 8 ft. 4 oz. 2/2 Batenkill. This year most
of my fishing has been done with a 8'6" 4 3/8 oz. 6 wt. Howells. This is a great all around trout rod as was the 4 5/8 oz. Howells 7 wt. I used to
own. These "heavier" Howells models "do it all" on medium to large rivers and I highly suggest them to folks who have only owned
Howell's delicate tapers. Some of the other rods I have fished on occasion this year are my Payne 205 5-6 wt., and a Nevros 8'6" 7 wt. I own a
bunch of smaller rods but they seldom see the light of day. Because of the past "casting thumb" injury I am presently trying to stick with lighter
hollow rods in the longer lengths/heavier line sizes. I have orders in with Spittler, Reams, Hidy, Gray. I did recently get a Aroner Hunt 8' 3/2 5-6 wt.
that I plan to use on occasion for some dry fly fishing. I also have a 8'9" 7 wt. Brandin hollow coming in next week that might become my new go-to
rod for the rest of this season and next.
My ever changing arsenal, owning and trying the famous classics as well as contemporary makers, buying , selling, trading in the quest for the perfect rod has always been a large part of what makes this hobby fun for me. |

the first rod i grab is my wright mcgill granger champion 8642. both tips a bit short but throws a 6 wt with authority. second to that is an edwards?
(discussed here previously) 8.5 foot for smaller fish and smaller streams. that may change next year since my winter project will be an 8040 from a dennis
stone hollowbuilt blank.

Well, right now, my rod of most common use is not my rod of choice. Living on the White River in Arkansas and considering the high water and seemingly non
stop rains we've had this year, I'm fishing mostly big water, so my most commonly used rod is my 8' 6 wt. Now, if I had my choice, I'd
probably be somewhere that the water was lower and smaller and would be doing combat with either my 7' 4 wt or my 7'6" 5 wt, but for now, the
8'er for a 6 is just going to have to do.

At the moment I use four most often but in no particular order since it depends on the river and my inclination for the day:
1). early Orvis Battenkill, 8 ft, 16/10 ferrules, 5 wt 2). early Orvis Battenkill, 8.5, 17/11 ferrules, 5/6 wt 3). Thramer DxSB, 8 ft, 16 ferrule, 5 wt 4). Edwards, Bristol, 8.5 ft, 5/6 wt DC |

I only have three boo rods, so it's easy.
From left to right: Orvis Superfine (7ft 2/2 #4), L.C. Parks (7.6ft 3/2 #4/5), Summers 275 (7.6ft 2/2 #5) The most used is the L.C. Parks (Dickerson 7615 clone, 7.6ft 3/2 #4/5). Superb all round rod. It does dry fly, double bead head weighted nymph rig, hopper-dropper rig. Haven't tried streamers yet. Jay

It's nice to see a guy with 3 elegant set ups to meet his fishing needs. It makes me think I've over done it, well so what. Is that the 2 7/8" Winston perfect on your orvis rod ? I know what you mean the Parks rods, I have his 7613, he sure makes a nice rod. |
