Hardy Bougle: difference between MK iv & Mk vi |
Lead | ||
|
I am interested in the difference between the two reels. Particularly quality; appearance; value; and collectibility. Thank you.

Quality -- it's a push ... i.e., they're both fine reels Appearance -- see pics Value -- Mk IV Collectiblity -- Mk IV Mk VI Porting -- drum (both sides), foot and crank plate ... ivorine handle with slotted wire ... aluminum spindle
Mk IV Porting -- drum (face only) ... permali wood handle with 'conventional' wire ... steel spindle
And following, a Mk IV that I altered way back in 1999 ...

Go for IV and you can count on that you have put your money for the future.
I have no experience on VI and believe that those are ok reels but being Korean made makes them undesirable (at least at the moment). There's one thread in this board about too thick reel feet as well (non-compliant with stds) http://clarksclassicflyro...u.com/topic/21524?page=1 -Jukka |

I recall getting a VI here through the classifieds from a guy who was very sure at the time that it was made in England. I like its raised-pillar looks, it's smooth as silk, and it fishes fine, thank you. Anyway I've never been one to get terribly excited or xenophobic over such matters. That probably has to do with my own origin--hastily conceived and vaguely recorded in Deadwood. That, however, is neither here nor there and, as the old forum disclaimer goes, is just me. Having a few promises to keep and a mile or two to go before I sleep, I've found a tolerance for irony keeps me on track. BHB |

orange caddis wrote: Actually, as the owner of a MK VI from the very first run which is marked "Made In England" I CAN confirm that. I acknowledge that most of the MK VI reels were made in Korea, but the very early runs of them were made in England. |

When it was made known that production was shifting to Korea, Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters in San Francisco bought out Hardy's entire run of "Made in
England" Mark VI's. Leland's openly stated this on their website.

Not one of the Mark VI's on display (first run) had "made in England" on the sideplate. So you may have a real rare piece of history. A confirmable transition Bougle Mark VI.
