Posts: 11 04/13/2009 09:27	Tags : None I don't know that much about collecting cane rods..mostly because I buy rods to fish with, not to look at. But flipping through some writings of those who know, I am getting an impression of "disrepect" for Montagues and Horrocks-Ibbotson, and a few others. Even Gierach, an avowed bamboo lover, dismisses them casually. BUT...weren't these prefectly good, serivicable rods? Granted not as good as a Payne or Garrison, and so on, but for a guy who just wanted to fish, they were just fine, right? Not that familiar with H-I rods, but the Montys I have owned and used cast just fine. Isn't that the whole point of a "fishing pole?" To simply work and get the fly out to the fish, then God williing, when the fish takes the fly, get the fish back to the fisherman? I'm happy with both my Montys..and fish them regularly. I catch fish and to my untrained eye they do just fine. Montys a poor man's cane rod? Perhaps, but I am a poor man and not one bit ashamed of it. If someone wants to sneer at me for fishing my Montys, that their loss, not mine. I perfer a cane rod, Montys are what i have, what I can afford...and they work. If God smiles and I somehow aquire a "good" cane rod, I'll be properly grateful, but I still ain't getting rid of my Montagues.

Posts: 1843 04/13/2009 10:01	Or to avoid the embarrassment of using blue collar cane, you can stay off the water between sunrise and sundown. g Flies can be cast and trout can be caught without even using a rod. High-buck rods can increase your satisfaction on the stream to some degree, but the fish can't tell the difference. Fish them Montys. It's your party.

Posts: 198 04/13/2009 12:05	The bad Montagues and H-I rod models are pretty bad, and they outnumber the good ones. The good ones are pretty good. Really good, some of them. Right now, the good ones are the best bargain in fly rods. The trick is in learning the difference. If you look around this board long enough, you'll learn a lot about that subject. You'll also find that plenty of people here own, fish, and swear by those Montague rods (and, to a lesser extent, H-Is.) "I can't not believe in a creator. Posts: 30 04/13/2009 19:12	One of my favorite rods is the H-I Tonka Queen. I like them so much I have four of them. They cast and fish better than many of the high end rods I have owned or cast at gatherings.

Posts: 289 04/14/2009 08:43 Sic transit piscatoria Clark's	In a one word answer to your question: yes. Montague and H&I gave a huge number of American anglers tremendous pleasure over the years. Keep in mind Montague made more rods in a day than most of the "great names" made in a lifetime. In some ways, it is like comparing a serviceable automobile to a high performance race car. The vast majority of people who drive cars are really only interested in it getting them from Point A to Point B without breaking down and with a moderate level of comfort. The few people who own Ferraris, however, expect something very, very different from their driving experience. The same is true for rods. The vast majority of Montague and H&I rod owners were likely very happy with their rods, because as Jeff said, the fish can't tell the difference. I think we find a lot of these rods, particularly the lower end of their catalog, in rough shape simply because most anglers didn''t take care of their gear. The point is, as Leo noted, that some of these rods served for a half century or more. Sounds like a pretty darn good value for your money, if you ask me. And a reconditioned Montague or H&I Tonka Queen will still be a serviceable fly rod even today. -- Dr. Todd
