In a couple of weeks I am planning on spending a weekend on the Cherokee Indian Reservation lands west of here...They are stocking golden trout and also
something called a "Donaldson trout..."(along with the usual NC trout of brookies browns and rainbows, not that there is any thing wrong with those)
But a quick check of the internet makes this Donaldson trout sound like the greatest thing since bamboo rod..full maturity in two years..when they hit
ten pounds(!) Okay, now I'm pretty gullible but I ain't that gullible. Have any of you fished for this
trout before and what can you tell me?
They are hatchery rainbows, cultivated over the years by Lauren Donaldson. Huge connections to steelhead, and cooperation with the University of Washington,
Seattle. Their size depends lots on food availability, but I have seen many 22-24 inch fish in short life cycle. Biologist John Weinheimer (Washington
Department of Fish and Wildlife, 360-906-6746) is the source I go to regarding Donaldson fish. The bible is "A Fish of Rare Breeding," by Neil O.
Hines, Smithsonian Institution Press, 1976. Hope this helps.
