To me, it's one of the sweetest Young's pre-war reels. I love the shaped erinoid handle, nickel silver fittings, and asymetrical pillars.
The exact Ogden Smith equivalent (but with line-guard) is "The Zefer".

Doc

The thread on the Ogden Smith Exchequer has prompted me to share this Allcock's "The Fraser" Dry Fly reel - a little worn around the edges, but
perfect inside.

. . . Doc - what diameter?
Is the asymmetry to prevent line cuts to pillars? (wonder if there were Left hand ones?) Brian |

Hi Brian,
It's 3 1/16" (3" in the catalogues) and I forgot to point out the exposed rim. I would suppose the frame was cut like that to position the (Ogden Smith) line guard half way between the pillars. Rupe doesn't mention any LH versions in his book. regards, Doc |

Doc,
Great looking reel. Thanks for sharing. The reel appears to have the groove for the sliding line guide. Have you noticed how on the early reels the groove goes from pillar to pillar, while on the later reels the groove stops about 1/2 to 3/4 inch short the bottom pillar? Dennis |

Dennis,
That must be a trick of the light in the photo or a bit of wear. This one has no line guard grooves at all. Regards, Doc |
