What's for lunch? |

Another thread got way off topic and started into a short discussion of herring, sardines and pretzels and this got me to thinking. Does anyone have any
particular lunch items they like to have while streamside? I'm always looking for new snack items to take on the fishing outing.

I know I mentioned on another thread that I love Beach Cliff pickled herring in Louisiana Hot Sauce.
In the TX hill country, we have another favorite - smoked and dried Alsatian sausage - our version of beef jerky Venison is the best, and there are feral axis deer here, so that venison is available commercially
speaking of Alsatian. There is a little bit of Texas in every German wine. In the 1840s, there was a grape blight in the Rhine and Rhone valleys. German immigrants sent Texas musky dimes back home. They were bred with the sick vines, and only the hybrid grapes survived the blight.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

grape blight : put Thomas Volney Munson in your search engine.
I love sardines, smoked oysters, clams and mussels. With a baguette, some good cheese and a good beer it just cannot be beat. |

philpsych wrote:Sounds great Philpsych. I have Ruffed Grouse in mushroom wine sauce with wild rice and a caramel apple pie on the menu for tonite. Good day to hunker in and cook here in the North Country, as it is 30 degrees with a strong North wind outside. Had about an inch of snow last night. |

Roasted lamb? Ruffed grouse in mushroom sauce? Man, you guys are stylin'! Tonight we're having one of my favorites...stuffed cabbage rolls! Of
course it will be accompanied by a Bud Light and finished with a couple snorts of Evan Williams.
And Bulldog...that sausage looks outstanding!

Ummmm..cabbage rolls!
We'll have to be content with grilled chili cheese brats with carmelized Vidaila onions and garlic fries. Liberal Makers Mark, of course.

I frequently stop at Dunkin' to pick up coffee and a donut to have while I'm gearing up. Other than that, I don't eat at the river, just as I
don't fish in restaurants. The exception is guided fishing in remote locations, when the meal is scrod, Taxachusetts-ese for catch of the day.

When I head out on the river with friends, I'm forced to bring a box of pastries from my Bakery. They tell me that I am not allowed to go unless I bring a
box of Danish and assorted cookies as well as a thermos full of black coffee. When I go alone I usually bring coffee and a buffalo roast sandwhich on fresh
rye bread. I ALWAYS bring a half dozen petit - fours for my friend to take home to his wife so that she will let him go fishing with me in the future.

If I ever have the chance to fish with Tom McGuane, I'll volunteer to bring lunch. From "The Longest Silence"
"The meal next to a stream was transforming, too, so that in addition to the magic apple there was the magic peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich." My interpretation of this meal includes homemade raisin bread thickly sliced, organic peanut butter generously spread, and whichever of the homemade jams are first to hand. Any apple that echoes the tang of cider is fine, followed by the last of the morning's warm thermos coffee, or hot coffee boiled over a twig fire, or if at or above timberline, french-pressed over the backpack stove. Fueled by little more, I have walked the Sierra's spine as near to the dome of heaven as my arms can reach, and held iridescent, living gold in cold and thankful hands... |

Nothing like a couple of grilled pork Banh Mi sandwiches streamside, followed by a big bowl of Pho on the way home at the end of the day. Great soup on a cold
fall day to rid one of the chill.

We have a little stretch of river here on the Rogue called the Holy Water ( like most every state has a Holy Water). When I head up there I fill a thermos of
hot coffee and have another wide mouth thermos filled with hot water, and stop by a little market in Trail and get a couple of fresh homemade Tamales dump out
the water and put them in. They stay hot until lunch, I can also stuff in about 4 of there fresh made (as you watch) corn tortillas, and I carry butter for
those. all carried in my old forest service fire pack from my hot shot days years ago. Some day I am going to get a wicker tapper basket for these trips. Just
because I have always wanted one, but don't see many of them in Oregon.
