Has anybody ever built the same taper with and without a swell at the grip, in order to compare the effect on rod action?

Hi Matt
Yes many times.
On the other hand rods which are more tip action like Dickersons are fine with a swell Also a Garrison taper is Ok with a swelled butt section. Always look at the taper first.

I like the Perfectionist and Midge tapers much better with a swelled butt, I hate having the grip flex under my hand.
