Many of you may know this already. I spoke with Ron today and found he is going through treatment for prostate cancer. His attitude is good and he feels he
has things under control. I wish him all the best and will say a prayer for him.

Matt,
Actually, his attitude is typical RON! Those of you that don't know him, wouldn't understand, but Ron's outlook on life is rather unique. Example; he and I were walking out of a cafe in Highland Mills and there's this guy outside trying to bum a cigarette. He asks Ron "Hey, have you got a spare smoke?". Ron takes his pack of cigs out of his sleeveless muscle shirt pocket, gets one out, lights it and tells the guy "Yeah... I'm smokin' the spare..." That IS Ron when his attitude IS good. And I love the man for it! He is doing well through the radiation, although it's draining him a little. When we talked the other day, he said the since the radiation started, he has just not felt well and kind of tired, but he's being a trooper through the entire ordeal. Best I can figure, he's had over 1/4th of his treatments, so it won't take much longer to get the radiation out of the way. Still, it is beating him down a little, but hey, he's 75 years old... what do you expect??? I have a friend who's 58 that just went through radiation for prostate cancer and it wore him down quite a bit. I have faith that Ron will be just fine once the torture of being irradiated is over. He is still in the rodmaking business, still a blast to talk to on the phone, still opinionated... still Ron!!! Nothing much slows Ron. Rita, (my boss) and I talked the other day, and she thinks after the first of the year, I should fly to NY and spend a week with him. She and I think differently! I think I should wait for spring and make him take me out to some of those places, to fish, that we looked at from the roadside, last summer. A final note... the majority of men will experience some kind of prostate disorder, with a high percentage developing cancer. If you're over 50, be sure and get an exam or at least a PSA test every year. If you're under 50, you're not immune. Any signs of trouble, run, do not walk, to your physician and get it checked out. Prostate cancer doesn't kill as many people as many other cancers, but it still does kill a significant number of men each year. Not getting checked is like wet wading in Alaska... just asking for trouble!!! Bob |

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Kusse. My father went through that treatment and it was exactly as Bob describes - draining. I also know that given the
history of the men in my family, it is only a matter of time before I end up with prostate problems. Knowing that, I agree 1000% with Bob that every man on
this board should be routinely getting their prostate checked. If there are problems, the earlier they surface, the more options there are for treatment.
Hope Ron gets back to the bench soon! Dean D

Give Ron our best. BTW, you could talk with him while he recovers. He loves to discuss the Payne and Leonard years. He could help with your web site as he is a
wealth of knowledge..

Ron is a great rod maker!
I have to admit that at his age I was little reluctant to fork over the money for one of his rods but he delivered an absolutely beautiful rod. I will give him a call. It is always interesting to talk with him as he has many interests. Every year my PSA is run and my Doc gives me a 'poke'. Cancer is no fun but it can be beat.-Dick |

Sorry to hijack a thread like this but Bob is right...

Not getting checked is like wet wading in Alaska... just asking for trouble!!! I just went through the biopsy and everything was good. It's still fresh in my mind so that's the reason for the post. Get the PSA, get the exam and get the damn, (yes "damn"), biopsy if you need too. Rolf Brook Trout are God's way of reminding us everything is going to be all right. |
