Interesting.
I have a box full of short shank, up-eye hooks I bought from Partridge in the mid 1980s, when I was experimenting with "upside down" mayfly duns that rode with the hook up. Those flies never succeeded. They always landed on their sides or hook down, which was upside down for the upside down design... All that is beside the point here. I'm curious about Partridge quality these days. I liked the way those old short shank up eye hooks looked. But they weren't in the same sharpness and durability league as the Japanese hooks you can buy now. Has Partridge quality improved since then? Are their hooks now as sharp as Gamakatsu, Dai Riki, Tiemco et al? I haven't bought any since then. And that was 25 years ago. |

Probably the only Partridge hooks that I've used for awhile (with the exception of some sample packs) have been the old Capt. Hamilton series of hooks, which I REALLY like but have a hard time getting (well, at least at reasonable costs). So far, I haven't had any problems with any of the Partridge hooks that I've had ... but the quality and variance of the Mustad branded hooks have concerned me somewhat in that I've rec'd different shaped Mustad hooks in the same box and between boxes. Supposedly the same Mustad hook number but sometimes there were different shaped hooks in the boxes or the colors and wire thickness were different. Best Bob |

Thanks for sharing the info on Partridge's departure from Mustad.
I too have some old inventory from the once venerable U.K. hook manufacturer. At the time it was sold in neat paper boxes with labeling. The newer old inventories are in their PE zipped locked bags with card board labeling, and a testament to hand inspection, by the stamp of Mary or Helen.
Yes, it is a shame that Partridge of Redditch, and the way of hand crafted hooks is a by gone era in favor of Asian manufacturing locals and modern chemical sharpening technology. It has taken the uniqueness out of Partridge's product being old school and able to call a product "hand made" in today's world of automation, etc.
I personally enjoyed using the hand made hooks of U.K. origin, and found no drawback to these hooks VS their modern brethren of same name sake. Sharpness was never an issue.
With regard to the sharpness of Partridge's Asian supply of hooks VS Gamakatsu, Dai Riki, Tiemco, Daiichi et al………… they are the equal. I have used quite a few of Partridge's "Kinkhammer" style hooks and find them as sharp as all other Japanese hook manufacturers as best I can tell from handling & fishing with.
